You're right about that TC. People don't understand the angst, the worry, the loneliness, the sadness, the emptiness, the sacrifice of the family left behind. What makes it worse is the nature of this war -- that the volunteer military is shouldering the entire burden while the rest of America goes on with life as usual. I remember seeing a picture of a blackboard on a Marine base in Iraq that said: "The Marines are at war. America is not at war; America is at the mall." I don't like that at all. It should be like WWII where we were all in it together. Where sacrifice was shared by all in many tangible ways. It must have helped the spouse left behind to be able to see the tangible ways in which the whole country was pitching-in and sacrificing together. But not in this war.
Since you live in Tenessee, I'm guessing your husband is an Army Reservist because I'm not aware of any bases in Tenessee. I know you miss him. When I was in Iraq, I missed my wife and dog like you just cannot imagine -- except, yes, YOU don't have to imagine -- you're living with it.
I think that if you have friends from his unit and get together with them occasionally, it could help because you'd be spending time with someone going through the same thing. Shared sacrifice and support.
We're with you. |

Thanks :) I am actually an officer in the FRG (Family Readiness Group) for the unit. So, I am one of the people that helps plan the meetings, GTG's, and dinners and helps the other wives while they are gone. It helps that this is our third deployment (last one was just 18 mos ago to Iraq) and that I can share what I know with some of the other wives.
I imagine there will be many wife portraits in the coming months LOL |

If it's any consolation JoJo, there are many couples that are lonely while their other half is sitting in the same room.
Consider yourself lucky in a sense.

Without getting into the numerous political issues surrounding this very true statement (left, right, and center), I just want to say that it's why Lindsay and I give quite a bit to various veterans' groups - most recently to the Disabled American Vets (//www.dav.org). We don't devote our lives to military service (although I do devote my career to the federal gov't), so we give to help those who do.

I like that Brad... Kind of reminds me of a saying I heard a long time ago... "There is no lonelier feeling than being alone in a crowd"
The saying did resonate with me as there was a point in my life that I can honestly say that sadly I lived that painful experience.

But the fact that the rest of America is going on with life as usual is one of the biggest reasons most of the men and women over there cling to. They know that they are there to protect the freedoms we enjoy. In fact some of them were the ones at the mall and decided to do something about it and signed up.
And TC, you must be a very strong and wonderful person. Not only are you missing him but, you're raising 5 kids and providing support to others who are dealing with this for the first time. Just in case you haven't been told lately.... Thank You for all that you do.
It isn't easy living the life of a military wife because you "get ready" for them to leave by either pulling away or clinging and then right about the time you get used to doing things on your own and you're self sufficient, then he comes back. While you are thankful he is home there is a struggle for a little while as you get back into letting him take care of you again. Its a difficult see-saw ride and it take a strong marraige to keep getting through it over and over again. This is the life of a Navy wife but in your case not only do you have to deal with all that but, on top of it you worry for his safety every day because of the nature of what he is doing and where he is.
You have a family here at DPC who cares about you. Hang in there. |

My wife is away at a conference. It's been two days and I took vacation to be mom for our three kids. I'm wiped out. Moms are amazing and I can't even begin to think what you feel like at the end of the day with five kids knowing that tomorrow will be the same all over again. Thanks for serving your family with the same determination that your husband serves our country.
