I am looking for a lense compatable with the sony a100 that parallels either this lense or this lense and I have no idea how to go about looking because I don't understand what lenses are compatable with the a100. I just want a LIST with ALL the lenses that would work with it and links to how I can buy one...but that is obviously just too much to ask because goodness gracious i cant even come CLOSE to finding such a thing. Am I crazy? Can anyone give me advice on where to look? Thanks!

Perhaps something like this?

I did a search from the Sony USA site.

Another that you might search for on Ebay.

Try a Google search for a100 85mm lens.

Good luck! :)

This is as close as you're going to get and you aren't going to even want to look at the price tag. When Sony bought out Minolta they discontinued most, if not all, of their lenses and switched over to Zeiss ($$$!!!) and Sony. By the way, that Canon 85mm f/1.2L you have linked is ~$1800.

forget google and use Mamma.com for meta searches ...

I found this information in about 30 seconds that I hope helps some ...

The DSLRA100 is built on the foundation of 16 million Maxxum A-mount lenses dating back to 1985. These include such cherished Minolta glass as the classic 135mm Smooth Transition Focus (STF), the awe-inspiring 300mm f/1.8 G and the 500mm f/8 Reflex -- the world's only AF telephoto reflex lens. Not only is Sony retaining a wide range of these well-loved lenses, they're also introducing Carl Zeiss A-mount optics, taking a proud legacy into the future. The A100 lets you take advantage of off these outstanding lenses.

The A100 not only lets you choose from a range of powerful lenses, it̢۪s also compatible with many of the Maxxum A-mount lenses and accessories . Meaning you have all the options you need for complete creative control.

Weren't you going to switch brands or something? The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is about $350 I think. I'm sure the Nikon is around the same cost too. The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is about $70, that's the one I got cause I'm a cheapskate. :)

The Minolta one is discontinued, but it's for sale on ebay. :)

Yeah I was seriously considering changing brands and then my dad reminded me about the "how many lenses do you really need" question and I figured I only want about three and if they are a little more expensive over time it will be worth not having to sell this camera which I do love and cherish and so later I may get a cannon or something but I want to get something that would specialize in stuff that my current camera doesn't necessarily do as well. So use the cannon maybe for sports or something and sony for portraits, i dunno if thats the way it would be but I am thinkin of going in that direction instead....but i mean wow....i cant affored 1800 for a camera lense, but i will definitely check out ebay!

Yeah well that lens on ebay is still running at more than $700...I dunno about you, but that's WAY too much for me. Something like this might be more in order for your budget.

Yes ... that 1.4 just might get you the DOF that you are looking for standard to macro lens for a LOT less than those mentioned already.

You have a couple of other options:

Minolta made an 85mm f1.4 lens. Scour the second-hand market and eBay. It looks like it was an up-market lens (the indicative price I have is A$2000, roughly US$1700) so even second-hand it won't be around for chicken-feed prices.

Tamron makes a 90mm f2.8 macro lens, available in the Minolta (=Sony) mount. It's not quite as fast as the f1.2 and f1.8 lenses you originally posted about, but it's still a very nice lens and does 1:1 macros. I even found one on eBay in Australia, so there should be a fair few of these floating around the world. I think it's still available new too.

heh. wide aperture envy...

I too was about to suggest the 50mm f/1.4. every brand has one and they are all good. Watch your pocketbook though...

if you are into doing Manual focus (have fun with that with your thin DOF though), you might also be able to try some of the other lens manufacturers with adaptors...

However, you might also be happy with the 100mm f/2.8 Macro by KM. still available through BH for around 550 US.

Speaking of which, Sigma makes a 24-70 f/2.8 as well that is quite affordable. Personally, I prefer the range of the 17-50 f/2.8 myself, but the bokeh of that lens leaves a little to be desired... this is mostly because it is wider. A bit more telephoto will bring that DOF down a tad.

just some ideas. You will probably be happiest with the 50mm for starters..

If you don't mind going wider..here's a list of 50mm. This site has a pretty good list also. Check 3rd party lenses..Sigma, Tamron, etc

Added: I got my Minolta 50mm f/1.7 for around $90 on EBay.
