I've just recently started learning about and using Actions in CS3. I've downloaded some cool ones but haven't yet made my own. How does everyone feel about the use of downloaded actions for challenge submissions? The rules say you must edit the picture yourself, but does that mean I can just press the button and...viola...it's masterfully edited within the ruleset? If I tweak the individual layers to change the effect does that count? I understand (and have previously used) each layer elsewhere but I did not have the forethought to combine them this way, so does this mean I'd be cheating? Am I the only one that would feel slightly guilty passing off a download action as my own creative genius?

I've searched the forums for the answer and came up with nothing.

I use some actions and the rules allow actions to be used. I would make sure you understand the action in case SC wants you to explain what you did to the picture.

For example, if the action sharpens and then adds noise to your picture, you should keep that in mind if your submission comes up for review.

If the action "adds major items" or breaks other rules, then that action is not allowed.

AFAIK, you can only use actions for which each of the individual steps would be legal under the applicable rule set.

For example, in a Basic challenge, you can't use an action which would create a duplicate layer, perform some action on it, and then merge it back with the original, even though you never created a new layer yourself. Likewise you can't use actions in Basic which make selections or apply prohibited filters.

Sounds good then. I think I'll just study all of my current actions and then make up some new one so I don't feel so guilty about it :)

Taking advantage of this post I would like to ask about Actions and the History.
Is any way I can create an Action using the History (not manually)?
Something like create Action from History or something like that.
Thanks,

I feel so used...how could you?! (just kidding)

I have no idea if that's possible, but I just learned how to use actions so I'm probably not the best guy to ask about Creating Actions Using the History (not manually)...

anyone else?
