Sorry, not a new camera model, but an older camcorder!
I'm going to be traveling pretty soon and I'd like to experiment with some videography. I was wondering if anyone had one of these cameras? I've read a ton of reviews and really the only question I have is, is it pretty easy to get the video files from the Tape in Camera onto a computer?
I guess just about anyone with a camcorder that uses MiniDV tapes could answer this though. Any input would be much appreciated! |

Most MiniDV cameras have a Firewire port to hook to a computer Windows 2000/XP/Vista have software to transfer and do basic editing.
Some Super 8mm cameras have a usb transfer capability but remember 8mm is analog not digital like MiniDV.
I have an input card for all forms of analog input from camera, VCR, coaxial cable.

About MiniDV
Tapes hold 13GB of data which is 1 hour @ 25mbps, which is the only rate you can encode in.
If you want to store non recompressed originals thats 13gb for every hour. But if your like most people you can either master the file as a MPEG or just copy it as an MPEG probalby 2.5 GB per hour of video. |

Cool cool. Is that for this specifically or for any format? This camcorder is HD (the lowest priced I could find ;) and reviews weren't really specific how much would fit on a tape. |

Well not sure whats going on with the new HD camcorders. But theyre gonna take more space due to increased resolution. I cant imagine them using MiniDV tapes that hold 15 minutes lol.
There are fullsize DV tapes also. Dunno I use MiniDV standard def (720x480/640x480) though. My only complaint is its motion interlaced. |
