| Ok, I just got my new (dude you're getting a) dell today. I'm running vista home on it and connecting to a linksys 54mbit router to my desktop running xp with a 11mbit dongle. Anyways, I want to make it so i can transfer files to my laptop which is in the livingroom over that wireless connection. Basically i'd like to use my desktop as a storage server. I've tried transfering the files but it takes minutes to even start to transfer, and then it only goes at 50k/s if i'm lucky. Obviously something's wrong so I'm asking for help. Any ideas? |

(trying to picture your situation now...does sound like something is goofy...)
What download speeds are you getting off the net?

You're not the only one.!!! (copy from the previous posting, at least I am good with that)
Anyway..my problem was that I upgraded my IBM notebook with Vista Home Premium and all the drivers from the IBM website..after doing that I noticed that the internet connection was running slow and I still donĂ¢€™t know the reason...but it was...I had to rollback to XP to make it fast...that was bad :(

Kyebosh try this...
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features
Choose "Turn Windows Features on or off"
Scroll down and UNCHECK Remote Differential Compression
Let me know what kind of xfer speeds u get after that.
ED: For those that need to know... Remote Differential Compression (in Vista) is an attempt to save (network) Bandwidth by checking the destination to see if the files being copied already exist and if so copy the differential (those that do not) and do some voodoo on the other end. Save some bandwidth and slow the process? I sort of get it but not really.

I turned off the remote differential compression and i'm getting no difference in network performance. I think the problem might actually be with my router. I tried a transfer with my roomate's windows XP computer and it was also slow.
My download speeds are 6mbit/400k downstairs, and 2.8mbit/350k upstairs both connected to the wireless. |
