How about a field, like shutter etc. for the focal length.
it would give a decent idea on how close to the subject the photographer was when he took the picture |

Actually I think it would serve to confuse noobs to have that. I mean P&S cameras are going to report focal lengths like 9mm fully zoomed in.

i don't think it should be obligatory, not even for critique club critique |

i agree on this, it would be great to see.

almost everyone crops the original, so posting the focal length wouldn't be all that helpful. |

So true. Although it *is* useful information in many cases, cropping makes it less useful unless you have the uncropped shot to reference. At some point, it would be *really* nice if we parsed EXIF so that fields could be automatically populated. Now *that* would be a step forward.
ETA: If the focal length seems important to the shot, I will many times add it to the details, as well as sometimes mentioning how much cropping took place. I do this quite often for astrophotography, where the focal length is of great interest and not often obvious.

Agreed, as long as the EXIF doesn't count toward our max upload size. :-)

I think most point and shoots have a field in the EXIF data for "equiv" focal length. At least my old Panasonic did.

I'd love to see EXIF uploaded automatically. Although the whole "Save for Web" thing might be an issue...

Some do, some don't. It's really no big deal though. More info is usually a good thing.

Yup. It sure would be great if Adobe would put a simple checkbox to "retain metadata" in the Save-for-Web dialog, instead of forcing us to "Edit with ImageReady" and save from there to achieve this.
I'll make sure that, as we embark upon the change to 720px (which *should happen at some point, since the community strongly supports it) that we discuss the accommodation of metadata into the file size considerations. |

Awesome! Yeah, either tack on 5k or remove the metadata when determining max size.
(I find myself agreeing more and more with you these days, Fritz! Overediting, pyramid quotes, now this... Great minds! =)

well, you've got a point in cropping, but even when people crop, the focal length still tells something. it tells that i was at least that long away |

I would like to see a check box to say weather or not you used a tripod for the shot. As well as a check box for flash/strobes
