Lets start a discussion of Macro shots and the best way to go about them. Such a F-stop, and types of things we look for in them.

if you can guess then no if you know for a fact then maybe. i still don't understand why people seem to WANT to DNMC shots. unless of course you were kidding then carry on.

as far as f-stop it depnds on what DOF you want. i use 2.8 most of the time.

lol and I (his wife) use 13-16 for most of my match macros. so I guess it comes down to what your tastes are.

That and the focal length of your lens + the camera to subject distance...
;)

How do you guys light it and do you use a tripod?

06/13/2007 08:41:02 AM · #8
I think using a tripod is a must.
How the subject is lit depends on what it is, where it is and how big it is.
06/13/2007 08:41:25 AM · #9
Tripod: Always... (and manual focus of course)

Light: I prefer to shoot macro's outdoors in overcast to get the subject well lit and avoid hard shadows. I might invest in a ring-flash though...

Anyone have some macros they want to share in their portfolio and how they were done is welcome also, that way it can start the brain storming for the challenge as well.

I ALWAYS use a tripod. yeah. and light with alien bees. usually a softbox and one of two other lights. sometimes with the shoot through umbrella on one. or relective umbrella. again comes down to taste. I generally shoot a few and then change my mind and rearrange the whole set up. and even though focal length and distance to subject are key factors theres still a big difference depending on wether you want a very shallow dof with a pin prick focal point or a lot of it in focus. They both have there pros and cons.

Here are my "30 days of Macros" which I love doing.....
Some of my most favorite images are "Macros", either of my own, or of other peoples.

9.859 times out of 10...I'd prolly guess wrong....lol.

Actually I predict a higher amount of comments for this challenge than normal, due to people guessing at what they are.

I think this is a great idea on Langdon, Drew, and SC's behalf.

I like using a narrow depth of field. I never use a tripod but that's just me. Here are a couple from my portfolio.

You can go through my portfolio and see alot of Macro's also alot of my challenge entries. Although I'm going to go against the grain and tell you I dont even own a tripod so all of my macro's that you see are handheld. I do use either a 580 flash with a Fong sphere on it, or a macro ringlflash to light mine.

What happened to your baby?

I don't have a macro lens, and the piece that attaches my camera to my tripod has gone missing. :( I keep saying I'm going to buy a macro lens so I can do a study of my niece's eyelashes, but it's not happening this week.
