My idea is to have the parents form a bridge with their arms and hold their new son. I would like to see a white back ground so to bring the focus on the models and maybe do a selective desat on the baby. I do not have an idea on how I can make a white washed out back ground. Also I would love to hear some ideas from different people. |

I have a few samples in my desperately out-of-date newborn gallery. White "washed out backdrops are pretty simple. Use a white background of your choice (foamboard works well for newborns) and set up an off camera flash pointed at the background but behind the baby. Overexpose the background to "wash it out" and light the baby seperately. I have some examples but can't access them at present. Newborns are fun to shoot. Other good poses are up on the mother/father's bare shoulder so that you get the baby's face and the shoulder and face of the parent.

Now I am drawn to a black background. Maybe some black fabric would do? I do have indoor lighting equipment, but how to direct the light? (the lighting equipment that I have is the old standard bulb kit with a white umbrella)

Babies will sleep the moment they lay down on the nice soft sheepie-hairie-plaid, or cry because mommy isn't around..
Get a big white towell (or black, whatever you want) and lay that over the mothers lap. Leave her hands and arms under the towel. The baby can lay in mother's arms, she can make sounds, wiggle the baby, the warmth and smell of mother will come to the baby, it's familiar, etc. etc. Baby will stay awake, and you have a good backdrop (towell) |

both these shots were done with a single canon flash, attached to the camera, bounced straight up off the ceiling ... velvet-ish black peice of cloth in the background.
very simple

Black felt makes a very nice (light absorbant) backdrop. It's cheap and available at any fabric store.

some favorite newborn photos I've seen are with a black background and the mother or/and father is/are wearing black so really all that shows is the parents face and the baby, or their hands and the baby.

All our backdrops for our studio are seamless paper on a roll.. This one is a grey. I can't remember though if I used a backlight on the backdrop or if the effect was created in pp.(maybe backlight, really not sure though)..
