So I got my lovely birthday check from my lovely and aged (101 in August!) gramama. And I plan to turn it into a Pentax 50mm f/1.4, which will fill me with joy.

Amazon's price is ~$200
Local's price is ~$250

How much does my local place get jerked around on pricing? I want to support them... but I'm a grad student, and $50 is very real money to me.

How much is shipping from Amazon?

What kind of service could you expect from the local shop if things go wrong?

What's the price of convenience?

A difference of $50 on a $200 purchase might be worth it, even if for nothing else, than supporting a local brick&mortar.

how many times do you need information and go to the local shop to just chat?

What does it mean to you to be able to go to a brick and mortar store and be able to actually touch the items you think you might want to buy?

I'm a HUGE fan of my local shop, I not only have to pay more, but I have to pay sales tax too when I purchase there - on my three lenses it cost me $800 more to buy from these guys.

But what they have taught me over the two years I've been going in there, that's a cheap price to pay for the education.

If it's a good shop, with excellent service, it's an asset to you and I would recommend supporting them.

(My shop has also told me that if I drop a lens they will lend me one until mine gets out of the shop - same with the camera and I didn't even buy the body from them - great guys!)

For me, the extra $50 is like an insurance policy. I can take it back and get a new one without waiting two weeks, get support if I have problems, and build a relationship with a local vendor that might come in handy one day, say when that used 70-200 2.8 IS comes in.

The local place allows you to try before you buy. I was able to try all of their 100-400Ls before settling on the one I felt was the sharpest. I went to an on-line vendor for my 30D and had to send it back within 2 weeks of buying because it was defective - something that would not have happened had I bought local. Saved by purchasing online? $100+tax. Spent sending it back? $35 and three weeks of shooting time.

Support local merchants! :)

Sheesh, I post a reply, and then check your profile. You're from Madison! What local are you buying from? Camera Company? I do a lot of business with their West location. They print all my output and I make numerous purchases there for accessories, even though they're cheaper online. They have a knowledgable sales staff and are always ready to help. I like to help keep folks like that in business.

Hey, we need you to join us for the Wisconsin GTG. See the other thread!

Yeppers, Camera Company. I live two blocks from Star Photo, but CC's been better to me so they're my guys. They just feel more professional.

Can't make the GTG, unfortunately; I'll be camping and smoking brisket that weekend (boo hoo).

edit to say - they also say it'll take 3 weeks to get :(

edit to say - they can't get it at all. It's discontinued. I'll order on line and give them my money some other way...
