Ummm, Susan, I hate to tell you this, but a 5.9 does not suck. :-)
Seriously, though, having an update button in the OFF position is kinda nice. You can turn it off in your preferences - just remember to hit Save after you uncheck the box for scores, or it doesn't work. |

OK thanks Deb, will try, and I know I shouldn't whine at a 5.9ish score... but it's been up as high as 5.97, I was really hoping it's break 6, so to see it sink to 5.94 with just two days of voting left a teeny little bit disheartening :-( Still mostly good comments but don't think any TS'er has left any.
Oh well, I'm sure I'll recover and still have a nice new homepage pic out of it. But it's Monday so I'm allowed to sulk. ;-) |

You can sulk - I know the "but it's almost a 6!" thing - really can be very aggravating! Take heart, though, that the Tuesday evening rearrangers (I'm one of those) tend to bump up, not down, when reviewing their votes. So you may get there yet. But as I've learned, watching the score has absolutely no effect on the final outcome at all. :-) |

LOL, Deb, how very true! I didn't know about the Tuesday night crowd so maybe they'll be nice to me. And someone did fave it on the first day so that always gives me an ego boost ;-)
btw what news if any from your end? Germany or someplace warm? |

Someplace warm one way or the other. The one way I'm working would be far preferable and more suited to my skills and abilities (and for six months); the other way (for a year) still looms unless the first way works out. Then back to Germany with time served for good behaviour. :-)
P.S. Favs always trump score.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but the Tuesday night crew never seems to vote up for me.

well we'll see...I turned the score off but now I'm having anxiety attack cause I can't see what score is! Better turn it back on, I'd rather know if it's going up or down. Guess I'm more of a Monday-morning masochist than I thought. |

Ditto that....I just got a fav for a side challenge shot, from someone with a 7+ on his home page no less!
Talk about a special feeling!

Way to go Jeb! And Deb, hope it's the 6-month stint so you can return to my homeland (I was born in Iserlohn, albeit to British parents) |

Through my church. Unitarian Universalists are pretty active in social action matters. My church is a Welcoming Congregation, which means that we celebrate diversity amongst our congregants.

OK enough self-flagellating for one day,I'm gonna go home and edit some stock pics now. *collecting empties to return for cash to put in TS beer kitty*

Heh, that's spooky. Mine was on about 5.98 for some time, now it's down to 5.94 too. And I'm also going 'agh, come on, it's almost a 6...'. Nice enough comments, 1 fave. Looks like we'll be on the same results page :)

my candid is at 4.7.
There's a lot of talk on this site about learning and progress and an underlying assumption that one's scores can be used as a measure of that progress. I'm glad Team Suck doesn't make that assumption. Lately, I have been making some progress as a photographer and it has no correlation whatsoever with the scores I'm getting, regardless of whether I am underrated or overrated... my photos are progressing but my scores are not.

I had some blood work done last week, and got a call today to come back in for a retest because my some of my results "don't look right". The receptionist mentioned hemoglobin, but I couldn't get any more info out of her.
This is a stressful week - this is concerning me, and my son (Bear) has surgery on Friday.

Don, for what it's worth, you've been doing some really kick-ass take-names kinda stuff of late. And dammit, I still can't write poetry.
I think I'm actually doing well in Candid, which I'm fairly delighted about. I'm not going to look at the score until we get to 100 votes, though. And unlike a recent challenge entry, this one isn't a sellout for a score. Not to say my recent challenge entry was a bad thing - stupid shot actually grew on me as the week went on. |

Lea, they probably just screwed up the test - don't worry about it. If there's something wrong, they'll fix it and worrying ain't gonna do no good anyway. :-) Best of luck on Bear's surgery on Friday. Will he have to be in the hospital for very long?
He can have my special Bear get well card, since it just happens to go nicely with his name!

Well - I'm going to hit the lab tonight before I go to my LLL meeting, so I'll know in a few days what's up I guess.
Bear's surgery is at 7:45am, and as long as he doesn't spike a fever, we should be able to come home sometime in the late afternoon. If he gets a fever, we'll be there overnight. Thankfully it's a fairly minor thing - an operation called an orchiopexy (for a perennial ectopic testes).
Thankfully, he's not crawling yet - so the recovery should be a bit easier now than it would be in a few more weeks.

Too much to respond to to try to quote here, so here goes:
Deb, I've still got my thumb pressed for ya in your quest for the right warmer location;
Lea, what Deb already said, on both counts; my daughter hasn't needed anything like that, and I must say I'm quite glad! Good luck with Bear's surgery;
Jeb, I'm so glad you joined the ordinary objects side challenge; you do great work (you're one of my earliest fav photographers here - third one I chose);
Don, you're doing great stuff; scores don't tell the story (and they certainly are not a path to learning anything); just continue to "have at them"!!
Susan, my "why" shot started at over 6, and now is going to end (if I'm lucky) at 5.2x; be happy you're within shooting distance of a 6 (but yes, I would keep watching, too, if I was you);
Jelena, same thing as I said to Susan;
Jelena, Don and all others who posted on the philosophy bit: sorry I missed that one, that was a great conversation -- wrong, of course, because there is no spoon, but still, I enjoyed it :)
Hope I haven't missed anything I should have commented on; might post tomorrow if I do!
By the way, from the perspective of general comments, I gave nothing less than a 5 in painting with light. 6 was to be average, but I'm guessing my arithmetic average will be about 6.5 or higher. Every shot where I wondered what the connection was (or even dared to think, "DNMC"), I simply assumed the connection, and looked for something interesting. This is how I will vote from now on :)
I will comment PWL tomorrow as much as I can! I'm more than 100 down on comments (received to given), which makes me sad, so a challenge seems a good way to catch up, as well as commenting on the ordinary objects side challenge.
I think that's it. Unless I forgot something (which I probably did); see you all tomorrow!
Best,
Rob

I have been guilty of this somewhat, only because my scores have improved. I also have been sort of "suffering a setback" as my last few shots have not garnered the scores I had hoped, yet the comments and feedback that I've gotten have been off the charts.

I tried out a website that was mentioned in a New York Times article about how to get more out your travel photographs, Zoom and Go. They don't accept black and white photographs - how stupid is this? |

Color photos are purty. They must only like things what are purty. |

/open rant/
Grrrr. I'm not growling at my scores, they get what they get. But why do some commenters, who are generally good hearted (I know, not all of them, but most are trying to help), put their comments in objective form? I made a choice in my candid image. Someone says it would be "better" if "these elements" (no, not real quotes) weren't there. Guess what? I want those elements, just as they are, in my photo. I don't want it "improved" in the way they suggest; if it were changed, it wouldn't be a "better" photo, it would be a different photo!
I probably did this some when I first arrived here, but since then I've tried to phrase my comments in terms of my opinions and likes/dislikes, often explicitly putting those words in a comment. You miss so much when you assume you see what the original photographer missed, especially in a challenge!
Grrrrr. If you don't like it, say so; but please don't ask me to make it what you think it should be!
