I'm applying for a staff photographer position and need to submit my portfolio. Not a problem. The problem is narrowing down my choices a nd the amount of shots to be included in the portfolio. So, if anybody has an idea of what an editor is looking for in general and amount of shots, again gereralize, please let me know.

I've read time & time again that your portfolio should be no more than 10-15 images. But.... those should be WOW images, the best you have with NO flaws!

but that depends on what kind of photography you're doing.
If you like to do documentaries, one photo just doesn't fit the range of 10-15. if you only use one photo of a documentation to keep the 10 to 15 photos, it won't be as effective. I think then you should do 2 docu's of ± 7-8 photos, and a couple of single photographs.
Portrait & product photography, I'd also say 10-15 total.

Thanks guys. This is for a staff photographer at the big local paper. Its owned by Gannett News and this is rare that they advertise localally for this type of position.

When I applied to be a press photographer on the local paper I took about 12 REALLY GOOD (Pictures I thought at the time were my best) pictures. They were all photojournalistically themed - Even though this still included portraits etc. Show a variety of work too. Some portraits - A hard news pic (Car crash or something) - Something funny. Don't forget an editor wants to see your ability of quick thinking and good technical skills. Lots of pictures in a studio where you have plenty of time might not be what he wants to see - Also most importantly - KNOW YOUR PAPER. Have a look through some past issues and see what makes. I did and it really helped me choose my portfolio - Anh hey. I must have done something right - I go the job on the spot!
Good luck

As a Fashion Photographer I have about eighty (80) images in my book which constitutes about 14 to 15 different series. I may have to increase the size to about 100-120 images. I have five identical portfolios.
