I'm just crawling in to seek refuge in a hammock after a helluva week and it aint over yet. I re edited all my folio images and they printed beautifully, yaaay. In the process I learnt that if you spend 19 hours editing photos in a stretch your vision goes blurry and you get colourblind, it takes a couple of days to return to normal vision...especially if you're still editing :( I'm still a bit blurry so I'm going to have a nap before writing assignments but I wanted to drop by. I don't have time to catch up but congrats where they're needed, I had a quick look at the results page and congrats all round, damn we're good!

I put a folder of my final folio edits in my portfolio but you've all loved most of them for me before anyway, I just wanted to put them together somewhere as a collection...they're not named yet, I'm too tired. But after Tuesday I'll be done and I'll be back to catch up on commenting and stuff....you know taking photos and entering challenges and being mildly social type stuff.

Sorry for the exhausted ramble.

Agh, what a nightmare. I could've sworn life was going well a week ago, then suddenly everything got complicated again... On the bright side, at least I'm leaving this city soon, with its associated host of tangled, nightmarish social relations. Maybe I'll do better in the next one...

Life has a nasty way of doing that, doesn't it? Here's hoping tomorrow brings another change, and this time for the better. Where will you be going next??

Heh, yeah, it does... Damn you life. Though at least things inevitably get better again, it's just what happens.

I'm off to Cambridge to do a PhD from January onwards. And a couple of nice places before that for fun (Madagascar in 3 weeks, yay!)

oooooooooo Jelena pictures from Madagascar, I can't wait. You know there's something about a PhD fire twirling in her spare time that I just love. I'm sorry to hear life is on a downturn atm but you have exciting times coming up and you have an awesome attitude to life.

Deb have you worked out a way to stay in Germany yet? Fingers and everything crossed hopefully for you.

That, fearless leader, is one of the ultimate goals for a lot of us. I'd say your work here is pretty much complete at this point. But we'd like you stick around anyway, 'k?

Thanks. Mopping all the tea off my desk right now...

:D

Great, now instead of "personal bests" we can have the occasional, otherwise inexplicable PF - the Poseidon fart.

First I need a fave from GeneralE, *then* I can leave.

May be a new best pic! And talkin of scary weather...I used to live in Terrace BC some years back and saw footage of a great deal of Terrace sandbagged. Not too surprised but glad I left there!

:) That was one of the main motivations behind choosing the project and the destination actually...
I'll be teaching kids English and working in a zoo - this is my once in a lifetime chance to stock up on big-eyed children's portraits and lemur close-ups! And lemurs are so cute...

you'll love madagascar. i travelled alone there for 3 weeks, and had a great time. met some incredibly generous people, did some stunningly stupid stuff, but survived completely unscathed.

palm wine is very very strong.
tampons are almost impossible to find there. i'd recommend buying a cup
practice your french, it helps a lot.
if you're over 5'3" you'll be very tall in the south of the island. (caught a bus in antananarivo and couldn't sit down as my legs were too long to fit between the back of the seat in front and the back of my seat...)
don't be afraid to travel by yourself - there are wonderful people there.

i'm so envious...

That sounds like it'll be a blast! I look forward to any pictures you choose to share.

Thanks, once again, to Rob for the results post. Did I hear you're looking for new logos or something? I might be up for that. Did you fare okay with the weather? I heard about the storm on NPR this morning and immediately thought of you.

Congrats again on finishing, Jelena! Enjoy Madagascar.

Don, congrats on that fave!

Everyone, think of someone on DPC you admire and go post in this thread.

I'm so envious, Jelena! Madagascar is one place I would truly, truly love to visit. Can't wait to see your photos.

:D All very useful advice. Although the cup looks a bit scary.
I think I shall have to seek out this palm wine you speak of :)
And, um, I'm 6' tall, I take it that's considered tall everywhere on the island? In Thailand I was about double the size of the lovely petite Thai ladies, I can so see it happening again...

I'm away on the 1st July, I'll be there for 6 weeks, and oh my god I'm so excited about it! :)

Oh, anyone know what the situation is with internet access there? I'll be looking for ways to submit fluffy lemur pictures to as many challenges as possible :p

I feel for you purple, I'm *only* 5'10 and often hve to stop and check between my toes to pick out short people too! :-)

When my bro was on a CIDA mission thingy in Guatemala he was called 'El Giganto' as he's 6'3.
06/08/2007 02:47:32 PM · #1016
Hey! Let's not be pickin' on the short people, now. I'm a whopping 5' 1 1/2"! I've been trying to get to 5' 2" all my life and am probably headed in the opposite direction these days.

Sounds like a most excellent adventure!

Chicago ended up not getting hit all that hard in the storm; I'd guess the gusts of wind topped out at 50mph, which is bad but not as much as the predicted 90mph gusts.

I think the various Team Suck logos could use a revision, if only to use a common size. I enlarged the ones I used for the results; I think a better way would have been to paste the original logo onto a transparent box for the size I wanted. I might do that this weekend, and replace the logos I have with those.

Any feedback on my simple ribbons? Should they be smaller, more detailed, etc?
06/08/2007 03:22:44 PM · #1019
Your ribbons re wonderful...not too smll, just right...

Deb, believe it or not shorter people hve an esier time of things...ever hd your knees scrunched up to your chest on a plane flight becuse person in front of you put ytheir set bck? Shorter people also have more fst-twitch muscles - lookit those kids on So you think you can dance, nd similar shows...at a guess the averge height of them is 5'3 for girls, mybe 5'6 for guys.

Nope, us tll people (well I better just spek for myself) are slow and clumsy nd lumbering and have legs covered in bruises from bashing into things. Mind we can see frther nd don't have to wear high heels!

And then some of us are short and clumsy, how sad is that?

Though on the topic of high heels - I always thought of it as a selection criterium for locating only the bravest of the male species. If they find me attractive rather than intimidating in my favourite pair of 4" stilettos - then maybe it was meant to be :)

Woo, congrats to both of you for getting favorites and great scores (so far)!
06/08/2007 03:42:59 PM · #1023
You mean I'm not allowed to wear high heels just 'cuz I'm 5' 10"? *pouts*

Rob: the ribbons are terrific. :)
06/08/2007 03:50:02 PM · #1024
Rob, just change the order so the logos are the last thing.

Award - Score - Logo

Then they don't have to be the same size!

The ribbons look great.

I might still float the logo in a transparent box, so the score doesn't look crunched against the logo. I'll leave the current results posts alone, but will try a new layout on Sunday.

EDIT: Adding a 30px transparent box as a spacer works well in my previews. Sunday's results should look a little better.
