I apologize for what may seem to be a silly question. I search all over and don't see any explanation for what the "workshop" is and what I would use it for.

you can put your stuff in there to see what it looks like online and nobody can see it unless you give them the link.

It is a folder that is not open to public viewing. You can link to it in forum threads for example. People use it for various reasons. Some examples-
--to upload potential challenge entries for discussion with your DPL team
--so you can see a potential challenge entry before submitting it, to see what it looks like in the dpc 'environment'
--a place to put print files that you want personal prints of, but don't want viewable by the 'public'
--a place to put pics that you want to post in a thread, but you don't necessarily want as part of your viewable portfolio
--folks that help people with editing questions can put pics they are working on there
etc. you get the idea :-)
basically, for any reason you want access to a photo, but you don't want it in your viewable portfolio
