I guess because I don't like looking at bad art. And I like to see people learn and progress.
Sorry my responses haven't flowed today. I lost connection shortly after I posted this thread.

I feel like I have to say something but I don't know exactly how to say it. I like this site it makes me think diffrently by giving me things to do and getting others opinions. Art is like religion everyone has there own beliefs and "wars" can be waged upon them. Is art learned or does it simply appear from ones being? Is photography art or simply a stealer of art. If you can't draw or paint you can push a button right. of course some would say a crayon scribble is a masterpiece. I believe to take picture one needs a vision a idea at least in that second and then I mummble about bumble bees and dragons eating pasta salad while watching reruns of "whos the boss?" and then a giant washingmachine filled with popcorn is dropped from a spaceship carrying elephants from another galaxy sent here to extract the blueprints of the staue of liberty from the brain of a dead seagull drifting on a garbage barge leaving new jersey I have problems typing things and focusing my mind wanders a bit. I like to think my pictures mite be viewed hundreds of years from now and people who wunder how we lived without ...........

I've had that thought, sure. In my mind though that doesn't negate the fact that I can learn much here.
I visited the Picasso Museum in Paris. I was shocked at how perfectly traditional his early works were. Definitely a case of someone who knew the classical rules before he rejected them.
Anyway, in case you think I'm being pretentious talking about Picasso and art, at this point I'd just like to grow familiar with my camera so it becomes second nature. I'd like to learn how to take technically proficient images. I'll worry later about whether or not it's art. |

99% of top scoring imagery at DPC is pop art. Don't get me wrong, I like pop art. AND I consider it art, not necessarily fine art, but art nonetheless.
I'm not talking about what scores well at DPC though. I'm talking about art in general or photography in general. There is life outside DPC. I see a bunch of crap locally, especially crap in model portfolios that is supposed to be "artsy". BS.

Artistic photography is what she does here. She is one of the finest representations of an artistic photographer that I know. Her work is fantastic and one day, she will be famous :)
Noobs, perk up and peep through her portfolio, you won't regret it. In fact, you might learn a thing or 3 :)
I know I spend a lot of time in there browsing around, reading, and viewing LOL
I think this is the kind of art you approve of Leroy?? Can we have an example of the crap or would that be too mean?? |

I wouldn't consider her stuff a technical mess in the least. She obviously broke the rules with class - which is the whole point.

Personally I think she was one of the best artists this site ever had. I loved each and every one of her images. There was nothing 'stock' or 'commercial' about them. They were just art. Great color choice, interesting composition, well exposed and very emotional. It's a shame she isn't around any more. |

I guess when you make a name for yourself you can take "artistic"(Crap) photos and people will love them because YOU took them. I've always found that interesting. There has to be more photos that I am not seeing, I'm sure they have both produced wonderful images.
Edit - Were those shot with a pinhole? |
Lyndstroms work is brilliant in every way, shape and form. Why? because she take's the viewer to where she is and puts them right there.
The images seen on the net don't do the prints justice at all. She is an artist in my book. An amazing one at that.
Let's put it this way. She's always shot the same way. She made a name for herself by shooting that crap. :-)
So it brings us back to the old question. Does DPC, Photo.net, Photosig and other sites on the net support and encourage Photography as art? IMO not really. It makes people better photographers. It allows them to grow and take good pictures and that's a good thing but that's were it ends.
Just judge by the statements that have been made. If Tuija were here and posted her images in challenges they would probably get 3's and be laughed off the page. I think that explains it best. If these sites can't recognize and support someone who is considered a true artist how on earth can they ever teach people how to become one?
So Defy yeah, you would have been hammered all over the board here but you would be praised by 13 museums and all the people that came to see your 35 solo gallery shows. Who's the better judge of 'art'?

I hear what you are saying Dave, and I agree with you. Most of the shots that win on DPC for the most part are very technical and could be used in most stock photography and be seen in the commercial industry. I still stand by what I said that if you have become famous doing a certain thing you could put out a far inferior product and people would still fall over each other to get theirs hands on it because you did it. I might have spoke out of turn with those photographers...like I said I'm sure they have shot more that I would enjoy, and photos in print take a life of their own so these same shots I don't care for on the net might grab me better in person. I know that true artist can literally go unnoticed by the voters as a majority during the challenge, but if there is an image like that it will get credit from those that see it's true beauty. I love photography and what it allows you to do. I try and look at what the artist did and not how I would have done it. DPC is a great place to learn but would not grade myself or the art I'm trying to create by how the voters judge it. Like you and I said...some of the best photographs of all time could be thrown on DPC and trashed by the voters, but what does that mean...Nothing.

It's like music... another form of art where people make a lot of things YOU might think are bad... but someone out there enjoys it and sees it as art... you can't define what's good and bad in art, that's subjective... |

OK, good point. BUT...
Many people don't think rap is music. However, it does conform to certain rules. Rap uses verse (often iambic pentameter) and rhyme. Like other pop music, it also mostly consist of 2-3 versus mixed between choruses and a refraim.

To be honest, you're talking to a fan of early black metal, where repeated riffs don't even occur, let alone a chorus... lol
I honestly think that what you're talking about here would be a great topic for discussion... but comparing it to language... which again is only held together by principles some believe or ranting is not going to change people's creative perspective.
Let folk take there own shots in their own style... |

I'm fine with shooting one's own style. Just don't use art as a cop-out for not learning technique.

I agree entirely. As was put to me - ' You can't polish a t*rd '!
In order to make all the arty statement stuff work properly you must have something that is technically up to scratch before you start to go arty on it.
Using 'Art' as a means of hiding exposure and focus mistakes is a cop out!
There had my say - matron says I have to go and lie down now!!! |

A 'cop-out' or a means of self expression?
Again, what you're talking about is subjective... |

It self-expression when you know the rules and how to implement them and choose not to.
It's a cop-out when one is just too damn lazy to learn them.
