hi guys
there is a very real prospect of me and the family moving to Wellington possible before the year is out. I am in the running for a role in Brother International based in Wellingotn

Any body tell me anything about Wellington? any areas to avoid when looking for a house? decent school etc...

do we have any members there? would be nice to maybe have a meet as we have no family or friends in New Zealand so would be nice to have someone to meet with.

cheers
D

Searching Photog Profiles with New Zealand as the only criteria produces these profiles. Some of these people are very active on the site.

I've got nothing useful for you, except to say, That rocks, mate! I've long said that I'd like to move to New Zealand someday. If you get to go, be sure to let us all know how it is down there!

They call the place Windy Wellington, you'll find you'll often be walking on a lean :) Friendly people, cool pubs, lots of steep hills. I studied there for a while many moons ago. I can't help you about areas to live etc but I'm sure once the kiwis wake up and see this thread you'll get all the answers you need.

I'm way up in the north of the country (and just heading to bed), don't know the area but joynim is in Wellington. She'll be able to tell you any others in the area.

Wow. My family and I are doing the exact same thing sometime late next year. My wife is from Wellington born and raised. I have spent over 6 months there on 3 different trips.

What I can tell you about wellington in general is That it is a nice City, Easy to Navigate once you learn the streets. Lots of food and entertainment, Things to do, They have a nice Zoo a great Public Museum which is actually the national museum and it is free. They have a very nice public library, transportation system is top notch, lots of shops, nice grocery stores over all it is a very clean city. When buying a house, Only area I wouldn't buy one myself is Newtown which is I believe South of the City Centre. Over the 8 years that I have been to NZ for visits that is one area that seems to always look worse each time. Run down property alot of spray painting going on in that neighborhood I would imagine it is gang related. But if you were to compare newtown to say a bad neighborhood in LA or Chicago Newtown is Disney World. But compare it to the rest of Wellington and it seems out of place.

We have been shopping the housing market over there for about 2-3 years now and have noticed that the houses up in hills on the outter edges of the city (aka the burbs) are by far cheaper than anything down in the lower areas that have the better access to main roads schools etc, Prices vary in different suburbs But to give you and example. My wifes parents live in Island Bay on a main bus route they could sell their 50 year old house for nearly a million NZ dollars if you drive 10 minutes up the hill you can buy a new 4 bedroom home for less than half the price.

As for the schools I can not really give you much info about them but we will be enrolling two of our kids when we get there I imagine they will end up going to the same school my wife went to.

as for your question, DPC has a big handful of NZ members and I believe a couple of them live in Wellington and am sure they will be in here to give you some advice but probably not for awhile as it is something like 3 AM tomorrow there right now.

I am going to ask my wife for any useful info and will come back and add it to this thread.

hopefully I was helpful. You will love Wellington.

update on my hopeful move is that my boss in ireland is speaking to the European MD and he inturn is putting in a good word for me in the NZ office.
I am just filling out my EOI form and will be well above the 140point minimum of automatic request for residency. looking good so far,

My wifes family for the most part are happy, but everyone is by and large very positive.

all going well i look forward to meeting some DPC'ers in wellington on a snappy hunt sometime.

updates to follow

Yip I live in Wellington there is also kari1 and kiwishotz who I met through dpchallenge :) but i havent seen them much around here any more.
I am happy to give you any advice but it would be good for me to know a bit more about you and what you like. For example its interesting what Brian says about Newtown as the houses there are quite expensive and it is well sought after if you like the young funky multicultural thing!
seems like soon we could have a decent GTG :)

Yup, Auckland :) Haven't been to Wellington, but my hubby tells me it's social, it has a lot going on, has an active arts community, easy to commute around, pretty and just about every place has a view.

I'd like to move there!

About me eh,
well 33 father and hubby, recently married, Love football, Liverpool FC,
Photography is massive for me and will be in the next few years as i try and make some money from it.

We like a quite life, nothing mad maybe a meal and some wine in the evening. no clubbing, having a child knocks that on the head,

We would be looking for a nice family area.

we are looking at, lower hut, Raumati, have a budget of about 550k NZD.

If you like Joynim you can email and we can get to know each other through this that way you get to know a bit more about my little family.

Thanks for the replies though, very helpful

I just wanted to say, That what I said about Newtown is based on my personal observations, I do not believe it is by any means a general oppinion of that area, It is very sought after property because it is very close to the downtown area Walking Distance actually. My wife said Berhampore which is right next to Newtown is where most of the graffiti is and not Newtown. If you ask me they are the same place, But I am not a native. They are so close together however that I couldnt tell you where one begins and the other ends.

My wife told me that the Western Suburbs are a pretty good place to live. Kind of Hilly but nice nieghborhoods schools shopping etc...
Good Luck on your move. I will have to look ya all up when we eventually get settled in over there.
