Well that was fun. Waited through the entire school year without a printer because I was morally opposed to the idea of paying twice as much money for the IP4200 which was around two years old when it had been updated and replaced already.

The great thing is that it arrived in stores last weekend contrary to what Canon told me themselves - specifically that there were no plans to introduce the iP4300 to Taiwan at all.

So I bought it.

Fantastic prints - very hard to find canon photo paper around here though, so haven't done any photos yet... But regardless, it's a nice printer for what I need even if it can be purchased in USA for half what I paid for it.

But here's the kicker. The damned thing has chinese firmware. Now my chinese has been improving a lot lately, particularly in reading and writing, but I sure do wish that the first thing it asks when I inserted the CD is - What Region are you in? and I entered my home country of Canada.

Anyhow, printer options are all in chinese.

I did a google for this and found a place to download the driver installation pack. I was given a choice of languages. I chose english. I uninstalled the printer drivers and reinstalled the new ones.

Still in chinese. WTF?

Does anyone know how I might be able to change this so Windows sees it as an english printer? I have a feeling that this software oriented, not so much firmware, but I'm pretty new to this...

It's more than a little frustrating.

Thanks for your help!

ha ha! I FOUND IT!

Just kept searching for things I recognized in the printer preferences menu and POOF I tried 'About' not expecting to have any settable parameters.

Noticed that it was set for 'Chinese Traditional' and changed to english!!! YAY!

Award yourself a cookie. Minor triumphs are sometimes the sweetest.

heh. thanks. didn't have a cookie so I went and had a fantastic garlic laden melty spaghetty bakey.

And a couple of Peach Green teas... heh.

Chicken :) You should stick with the Guo yu version. I always found that fun, having programs I was vaguely familiar with in English but using the Chinese. That is until one day in the late 80s I formatted the hard drive - and then got to restore it. Sigh. Keep on pushing that Chinese language ability of yours.

Heh. pretty funny. I don't actually know the characters for 'reformat', so you are scaring me!

heh. Actually, I've built and repaired a number of computers in chinese, XP and Win2000. it's just ma fan and to be honest, I really want to get the most out of this printer, not wrestle with it like that ^^*$^*(*&( HP that I was using in the meantime.

Problem is, much like your experience, I have little choice other than to learn as I go as they never teach this sort of thing in class and I find it hard to find locals that know what they are doing that at the same time have time to work on anything with me. if they know their stuff, they don't have time.
