I have an LG DVD burner which I've had for about 1½ years which up until the last few weeks has been running like a dream. Now it will only burn DVD's at minimum speed (it is a 16x burner). I've tried different types of media and I can only select the one speed. CD's burn fine at all speeds on it. I've tried drivers and firmware but it's no different. Does it sound like it's time for a new one??

| Has the option to burn at higher speeds disappeared from the list in your burning software? If so I would guess that it is only a software/driver issue. However if it is that the writer fails in an attempt to write at higher speeds then it is likely that it is worn out. I personally have never had a writer last more than about 18 months before it became unreliable. |

Yeah, I've tried it with different software too but as you said, the speed options have all disappeared from the list. It only shows the minimum now. It has done a lot of work so perhaps the balance of it has gone and it's time to replace it!

| It is odd that it doesn't show anything other than the lowest speed. Normally if the hardware is going it will still show all the speeds but the burn will fail at the higher settings - at least that is what I have found. I think it may be just software related, perhaps something you have installed is messing with it. Having said that though, if it has done a lot of work then it probably is on its last legs anyway. I'd think about replacing it especially if you use it for making backups. |

| I had a similar issue recently. It took a while for me to realize it, but the problems coincided with the addition of a new drive. It turned out that the two drives on the IDE cable didn't play well together. I switched the two around to get them on diferent cables, and haven't had a problem since. |

He said he's been running it for a while with no issues so unless he switched up the cables or devices, that shouldn't be an issue. I'd agree with zardoz on this one.

Haven't changed or added any hardware to the PC for about 6 months. I tried just running the drive on an IDE port by itself but still made no difference.

I know, but it wasn't readily apparent to me that the addition of a different drive would cause problems with this one (and the new one operated flawlessly). I only figured it out when I found a mention of the incompatiblity in the manufacturer's knowledgebase. |
