You would think SC would spend as much time catching those who give everyone 1s as they do finding those who give friends 10s

Well, if they give everyone 1's I don't see the problem ;)

ok its here the technies are voting now
but tke comfort in the knowledge that they would discus the most important issue if vincent put 10 or 12%turpentine in his paint
lets make jokes about them &carry on the pleasure of expressing our self
06/06/2007 03:37:52 PM · #78
can you do that give every one an1?
06/06/2007 04:36:51 PM · #79
No, you can't give everybody a 1.
Yes, SC spends time catching this.
Yes, your votes will be thrown out if you vote all 1's or all 10's.

With the shots I've seen so far, a great deal of them would have benefited (in my opinion of course) from not having the word "why" in their title.

I agree I was trashed in a earlier challenge for useing the CHALLENGE TITLE, AS MENTIONED IN SOME OF THE COMMENTS.

This opens another theory,Do we vote on the title or the photography? it would seem many can not vote without a title, but this site is about the quality of the photography, not the title.

Anyone care to remind me WHY I entered?
06/06/2007 09:48:51 PM · #83
I find myself stunned by whoever it was that claimed the challenge is "Why" as a statement as opposed to "Why?" as a question. First, the description is all questions. Second, that's the pickiest thing I've seen among a lot of picky things on DPC.

At any rate ... Tim, are you still out there? THIS is what I meant by a return to normalcy. :)

I am the one that made the picky comment. I think it very clear that Why was made on purpose. If you would look at challenge history, the What? challenge had a question mark to phrase it as a question, Where's Waldo? did too. The current challenge Why does not....

Syntax and punctuation do count...and make this challenge more broad to interpret than simply as a question.

And just to throw out there, I always thought "why" was a question - with or without the question mark.

If your point is that people should be open to pics showing "Why" as either a question or a statement, then I'm with you. If your point is to say that things that ask a question as opposed to answer one are DNMC, then I'm agin' ya.
06/06/2007 10:28:44 PM · #89
My original posted comment was exactly what you state. Why should be open to be either a question or an answer...

I'm so stunned at the quality in this challenge. I was hoping for more artsy and thoughtful esoteric stuff, but alas, instead I see something ie: a close up of a foot with "Why Is My Toenai Broken?" as the title. COME ON PEOPLE. Does everything have to be so literal? It never even crossed my mind to take a picture of something and then have a long drawn title asking the question why. I guess my thinking is way too out of the box for the general populous. Oops... I better go to the rant forum.

Why is this a good idea? Why didn't I think of that? Why not? Why ask why?

ANYONE WHO SAY'S THIS CHALLENGE DOES NOT REPRESENT A QUESTION, ABOVE IS A COPY AND PASTE OF THE CHALLENGE DETAILS, I COUNT 4 ? MARKS IN IT, SO pccjrose WHAT IS YOUR REASON FOR A PHOTO THAT OPENED AT 6.3, NOW BE AT 4.7

hywind: Normally I put no real emphasis on the title when I'm going through voting, and it very rarely will sway my vote at all. I just don't like it when people use the challenge title as the title of their entry, or a main part of it, and that happened a lot in this challenge. Also, it's like Jutilda was saying.. so many photos in this challenge are very literal, and I was hoping more of the entries would be more creative. I wouldn't care about the titles so much except a lot of them combined with the entry just are very matter-of-fact and not as "artistic" as I would have hoped.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I read the challenge as a 'brighter' why question. The "why not" made me think of zany kind of things. Going to the votes, it looks like folks posted pretty much anythign they wanted, as long as they had some kind of why in the topic.

Being my first challenge, I'm paying more attention than usual to the topic and the prints. Just surprised how mcuh the challenge topic was 'stretched'. Is this usual?

hmmm. Looks like I picked a controversial challenge to get my first photo in. :)

And I am not saying that entries cannot be a question - I think we all need to be a little broader in our thinking.

If you look at the last question you quoted - "Why ask Why?" - isn't that asking the question about whether you really need to enter the challenge as a question at all...

I'm not feeling like this needs to be too rigorous. It's a goof. It's a free study with a tenuous connection to a why. I just want to be amused or delighted or disturbed.

I've been getting kicked in the nuts since voting opened.

Presently sitting at 4.950

I have 2 one word comments. Neither of them bad comments, but it would appear that my photo is not all that inspirational.
I was trying for funny, but came up with lame, and the votes are reflecting this.

I'm just glad the summer semester has started up...it will keep me from having the time to enter lame photos on DPC :D
