For some time now, I've thought that it would be cool if you could let people vote on the images in your portfolio, as an advisory vote of how an image might do in a real competition. Sometimes I'll throw an entry up there just to see how it does; occasionally I'm surprised, but more often than not I regret the decision. Other times I won't enter a shot, and then wonder how it would have done (usually because the one I did enter is tanking!)
If implemented, the feature should be optional, allowing the owner of the image to turn it on and off at will. So you could solicit votes for a while, then decide you've had enough and turn it off. There could even be an option for the user to make the results public or keep them private. And, of course, it would not affect your overall average.
This is not intended to take the place of comments on portfolio images, which are often few and far between, but rather to provide an adjunct to them.
Inspired by this thread currently taking up the airwaves, I thought now might be a good time to post this suggestion. It provides a way to encourage people with a high vote, if you think that works, without affecting the competition that is the hallmark of this site. |

Yeah, I saw that, which was a great idea too. That's a give a vote and a comment thread, then post your own and get a vote and a comment.
I'm thinking this would be embedded in the site, so more users could vote (if you want them too), in a simpler way then posting on the forums, and easier to refer back to as well.
The portfolio votes would probably reflect free study style voting, since there'd be no challenge to shoot for in most cases, unless you were using your portfolio images for purposes of a side challenge. |

This is one of those ideas that should be made user selectable.
I'm personally against it. The last thing DPC needs is *another* way to make it more of a popularity contest.
I put photos in my portfolio because I personally like them, and hope that maybe someone else will like them as well. Putting an arbitrary number to them is not only meaningless, but a little bit self-indulging.
Were it an idea that saw the light, for whatever reason, I'd hope like hell I could turn it off for my own portfolio. |

No worries. Its an important point and worth emphasizing. I wouldn't want this for all my portfolio images either -- there are just some that feedback in the form of a "score" would be helpful. In fact, I think the default should be set to "off" for all images, so if you want it you would have to affirmatively turn it "on" for an image you want scored. |
