So I need a camera. I currently have nothing except a camera phone. What's the scoop on the latest P&S cams...What's something that's good, durable, makes good pictures and is nice, compact, and small? Under $200 would be great.

Thanks.

edit: I got a SONY dsc-w55 :D

oh yeah, there are literally a hundred add-ons for it...like zoom lenses, external flashes, and so on...I love it. And it fits in my pocket!

Another Edit:

OK...that one was pink when I opened the box, so I went to exchange it, didn't have it in anything other than pink...WONDER WHY lol...

So I got a Kodak V803...

Looks like I'm the first :D

Can we add this camera to the database :woot :woot

OK well you could try

Vivitar Vivicam 4345 Digital Camera
(4.0MP, 3x Opt, 16MB Internal Memory, SD Card Slot - MPN: VIVICAM4345)

OK lets be honest you are not going to get digital SLR quality but it has a reasonable range of features

Would cost about $100 I reckon (but I bet you could get it cheaper) maybe worth getting 6million pixels which you could get for $150

Noone will ever praise your camera choice but here are a couple I took with mine

Edited to add thumbs doh!!!!

I got a Nikon L10 for my wife I've been surprisingly impressed with.

Maybe check out the Nikon L12 for some more advanced features.

Great little camera especially for the price.

Canon Powershot A570 IS, great camera. It offers you full manual control and sells for about $205

Or a A630 for 200 dollars. The A570's advantage is the IS.
The A630's advantage is numerous but not necesarilly much better. The only real complaint on the A620/630/640 is its easy to blow highlights other then that its feature packed liked the 570 and the G7.

I second RainMotorSports, you can get the reviews of the above cameras from the same link I gave you in my previous post.

The July issue of Consumer Reports has reviews of P&S cameras. You might check that out. Their reviews of high end stuff are a little strange sometimes, but they do a good job of reviewing consumer grade stuff.

I can give you a point and shoot for free. It's old, it's scratched up, it's under four megapixels, but it works.
If you know how to take a picture, it's just like any other camera. I can take some pictures with it and show them to you.
It doesn't have that new-fangled image stabilizer thing, but it has a self timer and a nice flash.

It's an Olympus D-560 Zoom.

If your interested, PM me and I'll take some pictures of it and with it. I think I can go without it.

Check out www.keh.com They have all kinds of P & S used, that are cheap. Oops I see Beautiful Joe has a better offer for you. The d-560 is a good camera, I got it for my M-i-l for Xmas last year.

Camera is a couple years old though.. But it's still one of my favorites because it fits in my coat pocket.

I just don't use it very often anymore. It does have a few scratches on the outside, but it functions fine.

Check pawn shops too. They show up there a lot, and usually in good condition. I bought a Fuji A360 for my wife a month or so ago for $65. You get to check it out at the store, and if it works there it will likely keep on working. Good luck hunting, and we look forward to seeing you post some images.

They didn't even open the box to make sure everything was in there? thats terrible!

OK they didn't have it in anything other than pink, so I got a Kodak v803.

I like it even better. And this one is blue...it got good reviews. And it's just as small.

Keep the pink, and you will never have a problem getting your subjects to grin : )
06/05/2007 12:41:06 AM · #21
lol...I think the Sony was a better camera, but this one has some nice options. I think there are literally 20 different modes to choose from...like snow, sports, beach, sunset, cloudy, tungsten, blah blah blah...

I jacked the battery for the Sony thinking I was getting another one so I'd have a spare...man was I mad when they only had them in pink.

OK well I'm going to see if I can't win a ribbon with this puppy. It's so nice to not have to worry about which lenses to bring and whether or not I need to bring a flash...and where to leave my backpack with all my gear. Just throw this puppy in my pocket and go.

Plus, you definitely get away with taking photos in weird places without people thinking much of it. When you're running around with a dslr, people seem to think you're up to no good for some reason...not sure why when it'd probably be the other way around.

Oh well, maybe when I'm a millionaire I'll look into getting a dslr...probably a d800 or d15x by then lol. Or dare I say a 1dmkXXVn lol.
