Well, I still respectfully disagree, especially with the "two dudes" photo. I also disagree with your new addition (sleeping, passed out, etc.). Any of the above might get a somewhat lower vote than other types of candids, but I wouldn't put them in the DNMC category. I'm not calling you "wrong", just saying we have a difference of opinion.
By the way, there is another facet to this that I'm curious about. People's right to privacy, and the fact that some photographers on this site have clearly said in the past that they do not take photos of people without prior permission. I like catching people unawares, but if I'm going to put such a photo online I generally try to get permission after the fact or use photos with their faces obscured or turned away. I wonder how various people will deal with this? |

I don't deal with this.
I feel no need to get permission for anything I do with images taken in public.
As a related aside, I had a run-in with a prostitute who I took a picture of while talking to a potential John in the alley down the street.
I took it for the purpose of letting the John and the ho know that this isn't tolerated around here.
Maybe she'll be back so I can get another for this challenge.

Well, since alanfreed expressed his view... I'll express mine!...
Every other candid challenge we've had has featured LOTS of candids which were crucified with DNMC votes. Therefore, I proudly present this equally valid description of candid:
THE OFFICIAL STEVE DAVIDSON GUIDE TO WHAT IS A CANDID SHOT (WHO CARES WHAT ISN'T?), KEEPING IN MIND THAT I FULLY RECOGNIZE THAT MY IDEA OF DNMC MAY BE INCORRECT SO ALWAYS GIVE THE PHOTOGRAPHER THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT AND ALWAYS GIVE A GOOD IMAGE A GOOD SCORE
A candid shot, for the purpose of this equally authoritative instruction manual, is usually but not always a shot of a person, either aware or unaware, captured unposed in a natural or environmental setting outside the confines of a studio.
Therefore, the following items DO qualify as being candid:
1. People who are looking straight at the camera, fully aware their photograph is being taken. Seems obvious enough. Most of Librodo's work, for example, fits this scenario.
2. Young children. They make the best subjects and they can be very amusing. Bring on the baby pictures!
3. Pets. Why? Because they are are not specifically excluded from this particular challenge. In general they probably won't do well, but that is a different story.
4. Performers. Street performers make great subjects. Those guys that pose in Star Wars getups in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood don\'t.
5. Inanimate objects are NOT possibly the subjects of a candid photo! There is such a thing as going to far. Submitting an inanimate object would be called flaunting the challenge.
6. People who are asleep, in a coma, or otherwise incapacitated. They make perfect subjects. Not only are they unaware they are being photographed but they generally don't move, can't escape and allow the photographer to be very creative.
7. Any carefully posed picture done well enough to fool the voters into thinking it wasn't. 'Nuff said!
8. DNMC votes are usually a wrongful interpretation of a photographer's intent and rarely contribute positively to their improvement.
And now you know... the REST of the story!
Flame on! :)

Google candid on image come up with 260,000.
I got a question on the rule people and pets
Is you got both poeple and pet so rule 1 doesn't apply if you got a pet in the picture? on the stdavidson post |

I dunno... think it would not be bothersome if both pet and person were looking into the camera, harder to do without posing.
But if your concerns go this far then maybe you are taking the challenge topic WAY to seriously.

So according to Alan this is not a candid but according to Steve this is a candid.
Man who knew there would be so many DNMC possibilities. :-/
I am going with this definition:
"The photographic setup of candid photography is best described as unposed and unplanned, immediate and unobtrusive." |

Steve thinks this... Man, I miss Arizona imagery. LOL!!!! This is sooooooo Phoenix. The main problem is that the wall isn't horizontal and that is a far more significant distraction than whether or not it meets the challenge.

Darn it! I got an excellent picture of bride and groom dancing, pure joy, wide grins, everything. Taken two days too early. Oh well... |

Even taken during the challenge week the unfortunate reality is that some voters would score it low for purely DNMC reasons based on their own personal interpretation.
Not saying that is right or wrong, but if you want a high score you have to make it LOOK as though the image were completely random. That is hard but not impossible to do for a 'candid' challenge with a wedding image due to narrow interpretations of the topic.
You will notice there are three fundamental charateristics of most ribbon winners:
1-The image unmmistakably meets the challenge. No matter what, it can't be misinterpreted.
2-The image has added value well above and beyond the challenge topic.
3-It is technically perfect.
Achieve those three goals and your image will always score high.

Candid? He had no idea that I was there. How complicated can the definition be? Surely we can all get at least one good people pic without them knowing they are in the crosshairs sometime this week.
