I have had time to vote on about 2/3 of the images in religion. I think that there are a lot of truly dreadful images entered. I have never voted so lowly - but I don't have time to comment on them all - I am currently on hols in the Mediterranean. I might get time to leave some comments later, but here are some general points (from my POV):
Small icons/home statues: they score as badly as toys do normally. No effort, usually poor lighting, bad scores.
Statues: someone else's art. Unless lit beautifully, they score as badly as statues do in normal challenges.
Children: a picture of a child hardly evokes a sense of religion in the viewer. Think about what emotion you are trying to evoke in the *viewer*, not what feelings *you* get from something. You are trying to evoke a sense of "religion" in the viewer - not trying to portray your own inner sense of religiosity (unless the two happily coincide).
Churches: they are buildings. Take a good picture of it thinking of it architecturally, and you might have a good image. But just including a church in an image does not evoke the concept of religion.
Titles: if your title has to do any work to explain why your image concerns religion, then your image has failed.
I scored loads of ones and twos where people made these mistakes and then compounded them with poor focus, lighting and/or lack of inspiration.
If I may add, familiar imagery associated with "religion" tends to be overtly conservative and traditionalist (concepts that religion is often associated with). It tries to convey images of safety, family, perhaps inspiration or divinity, marvel, suffering etc - what it does not do is try and convey the concept of "religion". Familiar imagery is probably a bad starting point when trying to think of fresh, clean, imagery that conveys this particular concept - required (IMO) to do well on DPC.
