With all joint injuries, your #1 goal is to reduce the initial swelling. Start with RICE:
Rest - stay off it (I know this is tough for a mom with young kids!)
Ice - ice it for 20 minute stretches for the first 48 hours. Don't put heat on it at all during that time. Put the ice in a bag or towel - don't put ice directly on your skin.
Compresssion - wrap it in a compression bandage, often called an "ace bandage"
Elevate: lie down with the knee propped up on a pillow

I also take large amounts of ibuprofen - 600g four times/day (buy generic, not brand names - it's the same medicine!). Ibuprofen is not only a painkiller, but a good anti-inflammatory. In the US, that'd typically be three pills. But again, you're better off talking to a doctor before taking any medicine than accepting medical advice over the Internet. :)

It's amazing how doing those things in the first 48 hours can improve the recovery.

Oh, Lea, I've been meaning to ask about your username. I had no idea what it meant, but then heard a news story referring to "Kashi" - maybe an organization about child development or something like that?

I twisted my knee going down the stairs on Saturday during a fire alarm - slipped but twisted it because I was carrying Bear and not wanting to fall with him. Gotta love the mommy instincts.

Iced it and took some Ibuprofen and didn't think too much of it.

Then I went and played soccer last night. We didn't have any spare players at all, so I was on the field for the full first half, and all but the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half, at which point I couldn't run any more due to the pain.

Today - the outside of my knee is tender to touch even, I've got ice on it now and am resting as best as my crew will allow.
