Id like to do some time lapse photography but the anticipated environment for the equipment is harsh so Id like to use inexpensive digital cameras that unfortunately have no automatic shutter release functions. Does anyone know of a manual time lapse shutter release device? I have an idea of how to build what I need but thought I'd see if I could avoid reinventing the wheel if such a device already exists..

Thanks.

what kind of camera do you have?

I have a friend who made a completely mechanical shutter release for his Nikon Coolpix 995 (he had two electronic ones go bad on him) but I know of no way to make it automatically snap a shot at specific intervals.

Here:

is a manual release cable that I made for my Nikon 995 years ago. There are quite a few manual release designs to be found on the internet; the release design requirements are, of course, dependent on the camera's control layout.
A manual release may very well be your best bet, if manually triggering the sequence will work for your purposes.

I have a good design for a shutter release for a pentax. I modified one I found on the internet to use phone cords. By varying the cords I interconnect, I can make it anywhere from 10 ft long for the studio to 100 ft (theoretically more, haven't tried it) for wildlife closeups.

The parts for the camera connector and the "trigger" cost about 10 dollars at Radio Shack.

LOL. I thought you were saying you made it a long time ago, Kirbic. Only when I looked at the pic did I realize the model was a 995.

Heh, well I'm not *that* old, LOL! It is really funny, now that I re-read it.
