I was thinking about buying the Sigma 170-500mm APO because I have been doing lots of bird photography lately and want something with more reach. //www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ItemsDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&departmentId=10407&itemID=163602&categoryId=10412

Does anyone have one of these that can offer advice on if it is good or not? Or should I buy the Sigma 80-200mm f2.8 with a 2x converter? Not as much reach, but everyone needs a 80-200mm f2.8 don't you think? And since it has the HSM it should be fast focusing. (I cannot afford the beautiful Nikon VR lens)

So, should I or shouldn't I? And which one?

Why not save your money for a more appropriate lens.

I'm assuming many of your birds will be small so something like a 400/500+mm prime or perhaps one of the ones with VR (Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 maybe). The Sigma 170-500 is soft to begin with and more so toward the edges plus slow focusing and I would nix the 80-200 if my main interest was birds because you'll have a TC on all the time. I'd rather start with something with good reach and then add a TC when I really needed. I have a Sigma 100-300 and leave the TC on for just this reason when wildlife is what I'm after.
