I need to get an external flash but I'm not sure which flash units will work on the 30D. I know the 580ex will work but I can't afford it. Any other options? Thanks!

All of the 400 series Canon flashes will work as well. Much more affordable but still pretty good units.

sigma do some flash units too which work on the eos series as i remember as do vivitar if you are looking for the cheaper option. I actually have my dad's old minolta 2800 AF flash unit which works on my 30D - as long as the trigger is below 6V then you are fine - but i have to manually set exposure so dont use it that often.

If you want new, try the Canon 430EX, or the Sigma DG Super.

Used, you might get a deal on a 550EX or a 420EX. I'd avoid the 220EX since it's nowhere near as functional as the others.

I am really happy with my Canon 430EX.

Sigma EF500 DG Super (not the ST), it's cheaper than the 430EX and has a feature set more like the 580EX. Unless you plan on beating it up, you can't go wrong.

My 550ex works great on the 30D. It's been a good flash now spanning the life of three cameras. EOS-3 10D and now 30D.
