I did.

and that's a fact!!

Skip, I totally agree.

There are, I suspect, very few people participating on this site who are not in a position to reorganise their spending priorities to the extent of finding an extra $25 over an entire year. Certainly not those of us who live in the USA, the UK, Australia... and a whole long list of wealthy countries.

Whilst I appreciate that just living in a wealthy country doesn't make each individual within it wealthy, we're talking about $2 a month here!

That's cheaper than a single cup of coffee from a cafe, restaurant or bar a month!

I totally accept that even in the countries I listed above, that people can have really bad luck and be struggling for money. But it's not a common occurence and it's usually fairly clear whether the person asking for a handout genuinely could not tighten their budget or is just trying it on. And oddly, most of those who are genuinely struggling for every penny are not those who ask for the handouts!

Each of us makes choices in life. Shall I have a cup of coffee this morning or not. Do I really need that expensive shampoo or will this inexpensive supermarket own brand do the job? Do I really need that extra 10 minutes in bed or can I get up that little bit earlier so I have time to make a pack lunch at home rather than spending $3 in the sandwich store near work?

This is true. I'm just trying to point out that we don't always know the difference. And, by the way, I have given back. However, it was not advertised since I wanted to find someone I felt was worthy on my own instead of being brown-nosed. I think I made a good choice!

Just food for thought here... I never asked for a membership and no one has ever bought me one. However, consider this:

Just over a year ago when I joined, I was really in a bad financial corner. I'd just been laid off from my second job and the credit cards were starting to run out of room. Stupid newbie that I was, I tried to sell some ATCs here to raise some grocery money. The thread was shut down rather quickly (and understandably). Money was very tight for awhile.

However, the loss of that job dropped me into an income bracket that allowed me such a nice income tax return this year that I finally bought my D80 and some lenses.

And then, suddenly, the bank I work for was sold to a private investor who bought us out of all of our ESOP options. I paid off all my debt and put 20% down on a condo. (The seller accepted my offer just today, in fact!)

And to think, a year ago, I was desperate enough to ask strangers for grocery money!

The bottom line is that you never know what someone's circumstances are. A person's luck can change in an instant. Maybe asking for a membership is tacky, but maybe so is looking askance at someone with a gift membership who later buys $2000 of equipment. There might be a story there that you simply don't know about.

The main question here is though... were you so worried about a membership to this site when you were so down on your luck? I have been in some sever financial situations myself, and if you're in a position like that having a paid membership to a website just so you can enjoy a few extra benefits and enter one extra challenge a week, really seems unimportant... I highly doubt anyone who is concerned about where their next meal is coming from even considers a membership to a website.

I admit that not all of my spending was entirely rational at that time. I bought the membership on a credit card before the panic set in. I think it was a subconscious misdirected hoarding thing. Anyway... I'd prefer not to be put on trial. Although I've used my own experience as an example of why people shouldn't jump to conclusions, I don't feel the need to defend my decisions to anyone.

hey can someone buy me a membership please I need one badly.
I was walking down the street the otherday and a cat ran out in front of me which distracted me for a secound which was just enough time for the tip of my shoe to bump into a crack in the uneven sidewalk I was thinking of how that cat looked just like a cat that I used to have and suddenly I was flying in the air towards the street I looked up just as I realized I already have a membership ....

Heh.. When people are down on their luck and they don't have money, I'd think that they should be out working or making money rather than sitting on the computer..
Not to mention we can all definitely live without a portfolio or a couple different challenge topics.

It isn't a life or death situation in all reality..

If your membership runs out, does your portfolio (photos, comments, image details, etc.) completely disappear or does it stay there and just disable you from making additions?

Your portfolio is hidden but if you later pay for a membership everything is restored.

Once your membership lapses, your portfolio is hidden. If your membership is lapsed for more than 30 days, DPChallenge may delete your portfolio images without warning or notice.

Though in practice DPC has deleted expired portfolio images very rarely if ever, there is no guarantee that this won't change. If you wish to keep your portfolio active, it is safest to assume that you should renew your membership before, or within 30 days of expiration.
