When I first joined the site I thought it was awesome. I was getting constructive comments on things and learning how to improve myself. Somewhere along the way the comments are getting less helpful. I don't think that we are promoting helping eachother become better photographers. IMO the numbers have gotten too big. It seemed to me when I started that there was maybe 100-150 entries in any given challenge a year ago. Now it is more like 200-300. It's really hard to vote and comment on a challenge with that many entries. Here is my suggestion, which of course involves more challenges.

1. Limit number of entries to 100.
2. Member challenges- Run two exclusive member challenges per week. One Freestudy and the Other whatever funky topic you usually come up with.
3. Open exclusive challenges- Run five exclusive member challenges per week. two under the topic of techniques, two under the topic of composition, and one under whatever funky topic you usually come up with.
4. Make it so that you can not vote on a photo without making a comment that is at least xchars long. We don't have to vote in every challenge and with the limited number of entries it will be easier to comment on everyone we vote on.
5. Yes there will be some frequent repeating in the technique and composition areas, this is a good thing. That way when someone tells me I really didn't get it, I get to try again and see if I have improved.
6. Maybe try running the dpl under its own weekly challenge?

Just my humble opinion.

It is not related to challenge size. It really isn't. Nor is it related to the current state of DPC or its manifestions, as much as people insist sometimes.

It is related to state of mind and natural arc of improvement. If we look for ways to improve it is easy to find. And inevitably, as you improve, your appetite for learning changes, yet the table is not as full. Towards the beginning, everything is new...aperture, DoF, CS2, etc etc etc. But down the road, once you understand these ideas, you look for more.

Don't rely on comments necessarily for the learning aspect. Instead I would suggest you study other's work, read the forums, and perhaps pm'ing people with questions. Most people will be happy to answer direct pm's.

Those are my observations and that is what has helped me in the past.
