I'm curious to know how people use the 1 as a vote. I know personally I would not give a photograph a 1 if it met the challenge, regardless of whether or not I liked the photograph. A 1, to me, is "doesn't meet the challenge AND is completely off technically (bad focus, terrible color, and poor composition).

I really think I've reached the point where this site is doing more damage than good for me. I am definitely sitting out the next several challenges after garden (i've already submitted something there). It does me no good to stretch and try new things on a site that focuses almost completely on textbook definitions when it comes to voting.

This is becoming a rant, so I'll quit. I really am interested in the voters' definitions of 1, so please do respond.

Shari

I'm new to entering challenges on here (or anywhere else) but I've learnt a lot since my first submission. I'll share with you what I have learnt from using this site.

I don't care whether or not I receive 100 1's or 100 10's for a submission. All I care about are the comments. You have to remember that the voters on this site are not entirely dedicated photographers like yourself, they can be anyone who has internet access. So why take offence to Joe Blo who might have accidentally found this site whilst searching for pictures of a particular interest and then decided to have a go at voting. I bet if you showed this same voter a famous Van Gough artwork he would mark it a 1 cos he probably didn't see enough purple color thus ignoring all the other aspects.

When I receive comments that I don't agree with, the first thing I do is look up the users profile and if he/she is new with a low average score then I don't take it to heart but still appreciate it nonetheless. You wouldn't enrol in a photography school where the teacher knows less about photography than yourself....you would never learn anything new. Same goes for this site. However, all comments both negative and positive should be encouraged and not discouraged as IMO are the most important part to this site. Should a voter that I respect and look up to, leaves a negative comment about my submission then I would take notice, re-evaluate and learn from it. A positive comment from the same voter just tells me that I'm doing the right thing....it's not used for boasting purposes.

Just take what you think is useful from this site and discard the rest, even this long thesis of a spiel for that matter:) After all this is just MY opinion.

And that's why these types of voters/cheaters will never learn at the rate you have Kosta.

you said it right Jaxson..and I agree with your wording here "these types of voters/cheaters".

These brats are doing nothing but just spoiling the show to keep up their scores.

Also not to forget as you mentioned that "take what you want and discard the rest" I would say that it should be mandatory for a votor to write a comment if he/she votes a picture as 1. This way one would atleast get to know what their minds are going through. ..... A way by which one can learn and also the site owners can monitor if a user is giving mostly everyne a 1 to get his raking as high.

When preparing for exams back in high school ( a thousand years ago) the teachers drummed into our heads "Read and ANSWER the question". As a new member of DPC, I think this is quite important when people submit their works and others score them. To me, the point of the process is to meet the *challenge* (and do it technically well), otherwise we'd all be submitting our best shots irrespective of the aim of the challenge. Therefore, I give a 1 if I just cannot see any connection with the challenge (and I do try hard to make a connection). I'd also give a 1 if a shot was technically dreadful, but if it met the challenge it might score 1 or 2 more.

Frank.
