The time has come to confess my Selective Desat sins. Here are my outtakes for the Desat challenge for which my entry is now buried in the bowels of DPC history (thank goodness!!). Not really relevant to anyone but me, but for those who are vaguely curious how my entry arrived at #553 out of 554 photos (yes that is 0%)...here are the outtakes:

Original file (edited only to resize for DPC):

Full Color Photo (without Desat layers):

Challenge Entry (with 2 Channel layers / 1 hue/sat layer):

What everyone expected to see:

I tried to use desat in a more subtle way (Note to self: if the word subtle enters your mind while processing...delete the photo and start over). Obviously I didn't get that the desat had to be 100% for this challenge...DUH!!! As for my ridiculous title, I'm informed the only thing this bug appears to be "rising" from...is a NAP! So, there we have it...

I really did enter this challenge with an authentic heart...however stupid and misguided.

First off... fabulous job of post processing and crop choice.

This image probably scored low because of a combination of these factors:

1-Few, if any voters, saw any desat whatsoever in it.

2-You were subtle and expected the viewer to work to find the subtlty.
That rarely works. When voters have to work to figure out how you met the challenge you are doomed from the start.

3-You reversed the normal expectation for selective desat.
Where the viewer expects a BW image with some color, you gave them a color picture with very hard to detect BW.

4-Many voters probably felt you either entered the image by mistake in this challenge or were flaunting it.
As wonderful the color in this image is, is how opposite the challenge theme topic it became.

This is the clearest case of DNMC I've ever seen. DNMCers salivate at the prospect of finding a gem like this so they can gleefully pass out a low score. It makes them chortled with delight. They absolutely love it when they can say it is a good picture(Translation... better than theirs) but I HAD to score it low.

I scored it low for not meeting the challenge, but I also scored it high for not meeting the challenge, so you ended up with a 5 from me.

Did you do *selective* desaturation? Is the bug more saturated than the background?

I may be headed for the brown myself this week :-(

Ah, hah! I see the problem. You edit on a PC, not a Mac! When will you people ever learn? ;) ;)

Thank you, Steve...

The wonderful thing about you is that you never let me get away with anything...:-þ

(Which is, of course, why I adore you).

Ahhh.... GeneralE, you know that Tonto ran away with my costume mumbling something about a parade in West Hollywood. ::sigh:: So, annoying....
