The new canon? The one the sensor cleans itself? I am seriously considering buying one and would love some input.

If I do buy, would that make me a canonikonite, or a nikocanonite? Or just confused? :)

If you want a Canon 400D because of the sensor self-cleaning function, the cleaning does not work that well.

Hows the picture quality, features, etc.

Edit to add.... So i'll still have to clean the sensor?
Maybe a sensor replacement on my nikon?
Still blaming my camera for bad shots LOL

Maybe invest in a photography teacher instead. :))))

I would not buy a camera just because it has a sensor cleaning function. As you already have Nikon rather invest the money in a really nice lens, owning both Nikon and Canon is a waste of money. If you want a new camera body, look a either the D80 or the D200.

Seriously, I think when I took my nikon in to have it cleaned they did something to the sensor everything comes out soft (bit blured) since. Not sure if getting a new one wouldn't be a good idea, its got 15k + clicks on it. Basically im exploring my options. I really dont know how long the nikon will last or if the clicks wear it out.

Ditto. Having witnessed the 400Ds useless dust removal, I'll ditto the comments already made. A simple blower got rid of 95% of dust that the in-camera dust removal had not touched. Any dust that requires a proper clean is not going to be moved by the 400Ds de-dust.

If you're worried about your camera having a problem, I'd suggest either a) take it back to the service centre and complain until they fix it. Less than 100% chance of success, and could be a lot of pointless work. b) by another second hand D70 or c) buy a D80, which is a great camera, and will fit your existing lenses, so you can get a body only.

Maybe a first step is to borrow a D70 (join a local camera club if you don't know anyone with a D70, and compare the photos from the 2 cameras. If the other one is consistently giving better results with the same lens and same settings, then yep, it's your camera.

If you have an investment in Nikon lenses, you might want to look at the Nikon D200.

The Nikon D70s model was discontinued.

The focus on the Canon 400D has been OK and better with better lenses. The noise is bad. Usually if someone wants a Canon I suggest looking at the Canon 30d or 5d.

I had a Nikon D70s and could not get it to focus.

No camera club around here, at least that I have found. I live in the high desert of calif. If the number of shots I've taken isnt shortening the life of my camera, I'm willing to send it off to nikon and have them give it a once over and repair. Didn't know it was discontinued , does that mean no parts for repairs?

the shutter wearing out doesn't kill the camera, it can be replaced. at least with canon it can be.

Learn to clean the sensor yourself - there are 3 stages - blow it out with a rocket blower or similar
get an anti-static brush and brush it (there are inexpensive ones, $20 or so)
get teh copperhill and pec pads deal. Google around and you can get teh whole kit with everything for under $50.
I have no clue what a cleaning costs, but the inconvenience alone is too costly for me. Blowing gets most of it, the brush has gotten the rest, i have yet to use the pads and fluid.

Camera club? Google PPA - find the local or state org. There is probably a community for landscape photogs, or wildlife, etc. Ask here to see if anyone is local to you and do the same over at fred miranda - local to me are about 10 other photographers, some pro some amateur, mostly canon dSLRs but some Nikon as well. Great way to check out gear first hand.

Got a community college or any college? they probably have photography classes - you'll find other local people that share your interest and a teacher to ask questions and show images.

Compete here, or at other sites on the net. Great way to learn.

And yes, like anything mechanical, it will wear out. a new shutter is $200 or there abouts. How long will your camera last? Who knows. A 30D is rated at 100,000, a 20D at 50,000 and the early rebels at 25,000. Most folks get more clicks than that, but some get less. Canon's newest model, the 1D mk3 is rated at 300,000 - and most new models will be similar.

I find noise quite acceptable ISO 800 is ok and ISO 1600 is usable if not wonderful. I don't think the 400D has a noise issue.

About the sensor dust cleaning I am happy with mine at more than 6,000 clicks. It actually cleaned some dust spots I was angry with and after some use those wore off. I agree in that it is not the only thing you have to consider when buying a DSLR.

Good luck in your decision :D
