Sunrise is at 05:13 and sunset at 20:35 (8:35PM) on June 23. We'd want to be set up potentially even before sunrise. That time of year makes for *very* early mornings, LOL!

I am so up for this. Somebody post really good directions though. I'll be coming there for the first time, in a fatigue and caffeine induced buzz.

John, what side of madison do you live on?
05/24/2007 08:50:46 PM · #31
Coming from West side, I live near the beltline and Old Sauk.

There is probably a faster way. But this is the route I would take to make sure you stay on main roads.

94 East to Hwy 26 in Johnson Creek. Take 26 north to Hwy 33, Go East on 33 through Horicon From there it will depend on where we meet. But you should be able to follow some signs at that point.

You could also take Hwy 19 to 26 via Marshall and Waterloo or Hwy 60 to 26 you would still want to go north from that point to Hwy 33.

John, the best way that I know of would be to take Hyw 151 North to Beaver Dam, and then take Hyw 33 East to Horicon.

Has a meeting spot be decided yet?

Forgot about that way, lol I guess it is because I don't like Beaver Dam that much I try to avoid it when at all posible.

I have been trying to replay Horicon in my head for a meeting place. But all I can picture right now is the two Kwik Trip stations... I know there is plenty of parking by the trail entrances. So that will be no problem. However we should meet somewhere else and wagon train to the trails because they are a bit off the main roads and might not be all that easy for everyone to find in the dark.

Time to start tossing your ideas into the pile...

right now only thing I know for certain is that there is a boat tour of the marsh at 6PM. I am interested in this because I was told by a friend over the weekend that you get a better view of alot of the wildlife from the boat. Will this mean better photos? Wont know unless we go...

Are we still on pace for the 23rd ?

Who all plans on waking up with the roosters that day ?

I'm still in for June 23rd and I'm definitely interested in being up with the roosters.

I almost had to back out. I was supposed to shoot a video on the 21st up at The Dells. Part of the video is going to be shot on the boat tour, But one of the people from the company can't make it that day so they wanted to move the shoot to the 23rd. lucky for me they couldn't arrange the boat ride because of the weekend business at the dells so we are shooting it tomorrow instead. While I am shooting my family gets to stay at the Kalahari paid for by the company, I get to go on the last upper boat tour of the day which I have heard is quite nice. They are also giving us a gift card for a weekend stay at the wilderness to make up for the mishap in scheduling.

This is cool for three reasons. One I get a nice bonus. Two, I will have an extra 3 weeks to edit and produce this video. woohoo I love extra time. Three, I get to go to the GTG...

I can think of two easy spots to meet up at. One is the park across from Kwik Trip on hwy. 33. The problem there is the park is technically closed from 10pm to 6am. The other is my house. I live in between the John Deere plants, & it is pretty easy to find. The drawback there is we'd have to be fairly quiet, as I have no desire to take my kids along at 5 am, & I'd have to if we woke them up.
There is the possibility of a private boat tour if there is enough interest. There are trails galore, & Waupun has a number of statues. I was given some spots for sunrise shots, I'll try to check them out this weekend.

I don't know if I'll be able to make it or not yet. If I did come, I'd have to see if I could stay with one of my friends in Milwaukee and also get Friday off of work to drive down there. I'll keep you all posted.

I don't think I'll be able to make this one; my summer calendar got filled up for June and July.

i will be in chicago shooting a show on the 23rd

Rain & clouds shot any chance of sunrise pictures this weekend. I'll try again next weekend.

The rain and clouds are messing with me also. I have been to the dells twice in the past 4 days and still haven't shot the video I need. Now we are aiming for Wed hopefully the weather will take a break.

As for the GTG... Colin you mentioned about a private boat tour? Would like to hear more about that. As I am trying to talk my wife into coming along and a simple walk through a swamp is not going to sway her. A boat tour would get her attention, Private tour might just do the trick.

I might have to slip away for a couple of hours in the afternoon. But will be able to come back again or catch up with the pack where ever that may be for the sunset etc...

I am going to be rather busy in the days leading up to this so I might be a little slack in this thread for awhile.

Maybe Kirbic can takes us to his Turtle Nest lol ..

We have two options for private tours. Blue Heron will do one if we buy out the boat. So if we have 10+ people that would be the way to go. I'll get an exact price from them. It is nice pontoon boat, & a personable tour guide. The other option is Voy Excursions. These are John boats, not as comfortable, but we would definitely get in by the wildlife.

"Get in by the wildlife" sounds like my kind of tour! Comfort is secondary, to me.
06/05/2007 08:48:59 AM · #49
I agree comfort is second. Get my ass close to the birds. I will find comfort in my chair while I edit the awesome photos later that night. lol

I'll get prices for both, may have to have 2 John boats depending on number of folks coming. Honestly either one will get us good shots, Voy Excursions has more accessability because they ride so high on the water. I assume we are looking for an evening time slot? or early morning?
