I've entered a state where I have a little bit of money to spend (about $200), and I can't for the life of me decide what I need more, so I sit and stare and drool.

BG-E3 + Hand Strap - I'd like the extra battery and size, but the extra controls don't interest me that much. I actually like shooting with my hand on top. They might be nice in portrait on a tripod, though.

A light box kit of some kind - I made my own with a cardboard box, some diffusive paper and some shop lights, but it's just not working that well, and I'd like some light stands.

A Manfrotto Tripod + Head - I've got a tripod, but it's a cheap $50 3-way. (190XPROB + ?)

Or... should I save up for something else I want:

28-135 IS USM (Anybody got a used one they want to sell?)

A Beginner Bee

...or should I get something non-camera-related at all.

I hate this! Help me!

I have the BG-E3 and I love it!!! I do alot of shooting in portrait mode doing little league baseball action shots so the extra set of controls is nice (even if you don't think you'll use it). The extra size is a real help also if you have medium/large hands. And the extra battery life is awesome. I did 1300 shots one day and never move the meter from the full mark.

Two ideas...

1. Double your money the easy way. Fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

2. While I agree that the grip is required equipment it really won't add to your photography in the way a new lens or lighting equipment would. I would stick it in the bank and save up for a nice lighting package.

Skip the batt grip. Some people like them, I have never seen the point. More weight, more cost...batteries last plenty long for me and i don't need an extra button.

28-135 - old lens, you can do better. Do you want that focal lenght, IS or a one-lens solution?
Tamron 24-135 is a great lens - no IS, but it's sharper than the canon and a great studio and walkaround lend.
Perhaps the tamron 28-75 2.8 or canon 85 1.8. All these are over $200, but not terrifically expensive.

Get an amvona AT 828 or similar off ebay - $60-80. If you need more tripod head the bogen 322rc2 is $110 - it has more ways to arrange it and will hold more weight.

Strobe lighting is great, but you gonna have to get a light meter. Gossen makes some budget ones, but a buy once deal is the sekonic L358...but it alone will blow your budget.
Go read The Strobist (vis google) and get some of those things and an old Vivitar 283 or 285 or even a sigma EF500DG super and play that way for a while.

I really like the length of the lens because I hate switching lenses, and it covers most of the range that my kit lens does (minus the really wide) plus it's IS. (I'd really love an IS lens.) Honestly, I'd like to ditch my kit lens completely - it's so slow to focus, and with the rotating front element, I find I almost never use it instead leaving my 50 1.8 on almost permanently, unless I want to go long and then I break out my 70-210. The comparisons of the two lenses, that I'm finding, rate the Canon over the Tamron.

I've already got a flash (430EX) that I'm happy with.
