If I create a smart album in iPhoto (let's say all photos from a certain trip) and I want to burn them to DVD but it's more than one DVD, can I do that, and how? Right now, when I try to burn it it, I'm told it's more than one DVD.

Probably easiest to just split up the albums and burn them separately.

Ah, OK, thanks!

Second question,

How do I find out how large a smart album is?

If you want to just use them for showing around, and not for archive, here's a way to put all of them on one DVD by reducing the file sizes first. This will not affect the images in the iPhoto library, as it is a copy operation.
1 Create a new file in finder, bottom section, in documents or pictures
2 Open iPhoto, and open the file you want to burn to disc
3 Select the ones that you want to burn
4 Click "File" at the top of the page, then click "export"
5 A window will open asking about file format, and size, and you can select the size you want them to be on the final disc. Click "Export"
6 A window will open, use the dropdown to select "documents or pics" then the file you want them in for transfer to the disc, the one you created in step 1.
7 Click "OK" At this point it will transfer copies to the new file and resize them to the size specified in step 5. This may take a while, as the program has to resize each one as it copies it to the new file.
8 Insert the DVD, and give it a name in "Finder"
9 In the finder window, open the created file, hilight all the images there, and drag them to the DVD in the finder window.
10 Click the disc icon when the transfer is finished.
11 With the disc icon hilightted, click "File" , then click "Burn Disc" and they will all burn to one disc if they will fit after the resize.

This will make a disc that can be used on any computer, as the window says when you click "Burn Disc". I know that it works, as I just finished a similar disc. The smaller file sizes will also allow DVD players to play them without having to grapple with huge files while it is doing a slide show. Some DVD players will not play a disc with over 100 images on it for some reason.

Good luck, and post some vacation pics for us to see.
I would also do what scalvert said first. Split them up and make a hard copy backup of the full sized files.
edit, One more thing, if you are low on harddrive space, the warning may be about harddrive space instead of disc space. It copies the files to the harddrive somewhere and makes up the complete disc contents into one file before burning the disc. I have done this and had to transfer smaller files to my backup drive until I made enough room on the primary HD.

Never done it, but my guess is that iPhoto will warn you if the album is too large to be burned to a single DVD (if that's the case, it must be a heckuva large album). It may even offer to split it between two DVDs itself.

On the left side in the iPhoto window, hilight the album, and at the bottom of the album list it tells how many images, and the total file size there. If you open an album and hilight some of the thumbs, it will tell you how many, and the total file size of all of them combined.
