I've been told by a couple different people that the pictures from my Rebel XT are actually worse than the pictures from my old Canon Powershot and I think I agree with them. It seems that the pictures from the Rebel are out of focus a lot of the time.
I'm using the lens from an old Rebel non-dslr camera. Could that be the reason why? Also, I bought this camera refurbished so is it possible there could be an issue with the camera itself? Or am I just not using it correctly?
I have it set on AI Servo and I usually use the AV mode.

All of these photographs were taken with my Rebel...

If you could give me your opinion I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

AI Servo is a special focus mode for tracking moving objects.

Do you usually, focus then recompose and click the shutter? If so, AI Servo will refocus and may not be locking focus on what you expect.

what lens where they taken with, its probably not the camera itself, but the lens. Some lenses are sharper than others.

On the Canon Rebel T2 Film camera and apparent the 300D/Rebel Continous Auto Focus is called AI Servo.

At half press instead of focusing and staying there, it keeps focusing so you can follow a moving object say a bird a player or a car and as focus needs to change it does so.

Sometimes I do that. I'll try the One Shot mode next time and see if it makes a difference

AI Servo in simple terms is same as Continuous Focus subject moved the cam refocuses the shot... Great for airshows, races, birds, small fury animals (kids) but any other time a bad idea... combine that with using all 7 or 9 focal points and it is a recipe for back/front focusing.

As long as you got a half trigger squeeze the cam is trying to focus.

AI AF mode the camera is supposed to switch between AI Servo and Single shot... subject starts moving it switchs to AI Servo; Subject Stays still it stays in single shot. Tries to save battery that way.

Just starting out and before believing lens/cam bad... go to Single Shot Focus with Center AF Point only selected and do some tests.

ED: Next Question

What are you doing to edit your shots, and are you going from P&S to dSLR recently? dSLR shots are softer than peashooters by design, meaning we have to do more in our editing software before the shot is ready to show.

Your pics don't look that bad... the lens seems to be sharp where it focuses

I've had the same issue in the past. The culprit usually was my kit lens. If you take a deep breath, it moved the focus...very sloppy and I've even sent it in to be told it's fine. That is the only lens I get comments about out of focus with.

The Al Servo comment is another goodie. Check these two items out and see if it helps.

edited for typo.
