Don't worry...I'll post another note in DPC Forums about a month before the eclipse ;-)

...huh, looks like I'll be taking a trip to Salem in 10 years...
hmm, 10 years...I'll be 28, probably married with kids in some random-ass place scraping up a living taking weird pictures...sounds like fun :D |

Fritz, you might consider the west coast. Points east will be nearer to noon with the sun highest in the sky. Of course, the south side of The Grand Tetons in Wyoming might make a good choice to. ;)
Totality arrives at 10:17AM on the "Left" coast and ends before 3PM in South Carolina so will be lowest in the sky for those on each coast. It is in August when the weather is clearest as well. The Three Sisters in central Oregon which are GORGIOUS or Mt. Jefferson both are near the center of totality and would make terrific landscapes. |
Pick a spot, I'll meet you there! |

That's downright traitorous talk coming from my presumed co-organizer of the Great 2017 Wisconsin Eclipse Expedition. I was planning to drive down to St. Louis about 2 days prior to the event, and then be ready to be mobile on the big day to move toward good weather.
This is the first total solar eclipse to touch the continental US since '79. God wouldn't make it cloudy, would She? |

More likely listening to Cat Stevens records ... |
Well, yeah, but c'mon, to pick that name of all names of all songs, and happen to be dead center in a solar eclipse?
I forgot to mention the other one: July 11, 1991. My friend and I were hiking in Yosemite National Park and had no idea it was coming. We saw the eclipse as hundreds of images formed by leaves in the trees above us. They basically formed a multitude of shifting pinhole cameras projecting on the ground. It was only partial, but still very, very cool.

If I were doing it right now I'd pick Century Drive just west of Bend, Oregon. Oh... bring your Wisconsin friends. You have to leave the state anyway. :)
The weather is practically guaranteed to be perfect and the area is so picturesque that The American Map Corporation, in conjunction with The Discovery Channel and Mapquest, used a picture of South Sister for the COVER of their giant US/Canda Road Atlas for 2002.
And guess what?... South Sister is perfectly placed for catching the morning eclipse as a spectacular landscape!
The following shows an arial view of The Three Sisters and explains some of the local geology. They are slumbering volcanos. The close one is South Sister(I've climbed it a couple times) and at ground level there are large Pondersoa Pine stands punctuated with vivid green meadows for foreground interest and the road is made of red pumice so even that is photogenic!

Nope... sorry... the path of totality passes south of Portland, Oregon. If you drive down to Salem, though, you will see it!

Now if I can only get them to admit they're my friends ;-)
But seriously, sounds like a fabulous location. And a place I've never been to.

Well, I'm in Tigard. I can't see how a couple miles is going to make that big of a difference. A 99.9% might as well be full in my book.
Speaking of desert, though... it's going to be completely encompassing Warm Springs... |

Here is a story I'm sure you'll find HILARIOUS...
The first time I climbed South Sister (10,400 ft) I was alone and, YES, I took the wrong trail! What should have been a 14 mile round trip and 6.5K climb to the top turned out to be about 24 miles. LOL!!! In the picture I referenced I went to the lake in the foreground first and had to backtrack then climb over the lava flow you see before I could climb the mountain.
It turned out all right, though.
On the way back it was dark and I stopped to talk with some folks by their campfire near the treeline. They tanked me up with vodka and I was feeling pretty good. I hiked the last 4 miles back to my car in the dark, drove into Bend, got a hotel room and then went to shoot pool and drink beer until the bars closed!

Actually... it makes all the difference in the world.
Even when the moon covers 99.9% of the sun it is still nearly full daylight. The sky only gets pale on the fringes. And even if you are inside the band of totality but just barely inside it the full eclipse will last only a couple seconds at most. The drive down to Salem is worth it because you will get close to two minutes of full totality and no unbalanced brightening on one side of the sun.
In Tigard you'll get nothing but a really large coverage partial eclipse.

True to form! LOL, I imagine the remainder of the hike was much more pleasant after a little vodka! Sounds like one of the escapades from my younger days. |

If we do this GTG, Steve needs to have a field-trip buddy. We should also safety-pin a couple of phone numbers to the back of his shirt in case he wanders off.

I'll have to go somewhere else to see this. I'm thinking the Teton will be a fantastic location. Anyone up for a Tetons/Yellowstone GTG? |

I recommend vodka in a backpack. My sense of direction improves with consumption. ;)

Hell, by then we'll all have GPS implants ;-)
... but vodka in the backpack still sounds like a plan! Doubles as fire starter too! |
