(Thanks dw ;o) )

Thoughts???

I rarely ever use the 100mm 2.8 and it frustrates me anyways...LOL. I have the 420EX which also frustrates me with it's low recycle times amongst other things.

I use my flash WAY more than the lens but I am very concerned I will regret selling it!!! It is definitely a lens I use more as a toy than anything. Even so, I probably can count on my 10 fingers how many times I have used it in in the past year or so.

I currently have the 24-70 2.8L, the 70-200mm 2.8L IS, the 10-22mm, the 50mm 1.8 (which I never use either.)

I need some good reasons to sell/trade and some good reasons to keep it! I primarily do portrait photography.

Thanks!
Jenn

The new 580EX II is well worth the buy. Much better than the mark I which had a crappy battery door, for instance. Zooms tend to make for laziness. That 100mm is one of the best lenses that Canon make.

I think you missed a letter. I "low recycle time" would be a good thing. But a "slow recycle time" might frustrate you. :-)

The 580EX will definitely recycle faster, but..... I've rarely had my 420EX not keep up with me. Makes me wonder if you're trying to light something too far away with the 420 and so it's dumping its full charge instead of a partial charge? If so, the 580EX will help, but the problem will remain.

The 580EX improves on this aspect in three ways: The circuitry itself is a little bit faster, the light output a little bit stronger, but most of all, it does a better job of efficiently focusing the light on a distant subject so that there is less waisted light.

If possible, I would keep the 420 and use it as a slave, and get the 580 as a master. Then position the slave closer (but at an angle) to the subject. You'll get better (more pleasing) results by using both of them together. And the recycle times for the 420 will go down by being closer to the subject (and if the 580 is also contributing to the light, the 420 won't need to dump as much light - E-TTL magic takes care of all of that).

DW- Thanks. :) Yep, slow recycle time is what I meant...LOL!! I definitely plan on keeping the 420EX for use as a slave. I want to try and shift away from using my full studio set-up because our living room is small and it takes forever to set up and take down with every shoot! I'd love to take a small set-up into other people's houses.

Do you use regular umbrellas with them??? How do the umbrella's mount to a tripod?

Pamela- I will definitely post on the forums first when I decide to sell. I am really leaning in the SELL direction.

420 is definitely not powerful enough for routine use with an umbrella, and IMO neither is the 580, although it would be quite a bit better than the 420 for that.

Maybe I'll just stick with my Fong's ;o) I shot an event for a local school, today, and I am more in love with my Fong than ever! It was in a gymnasium and thank God I had the Lightsphere with me!

I use the 420 with a white translucent shoot-through umbrella all the time. All of the shots I posted in the other thread (about using the 580) were done with the 420 and an umbrella. In fact, that's just about the only way I use my 420. The 550 is often on another camera. But when it's not, it's doing the same thing (slave mode with an umbrella).
