I shot this about an hour ago...
Great storm cloud here in Colorado Springs. I drove to the top of Palmer Park, which overlooks the city towards the West (Pikes Peak and the front range), but by the time I got up there, the storm had enveloped the mountains and the dramatic sky was gone.
Comments welcome!

The white box is extremely boxxy, I find the red x to be a nice shade of red, the script has been done to death, but still adds a bit to the shot. Overall very nice but a bit frustrating ;p

Here is a shot I got on the way home... shooting through the windshield (I don't recommend driving and taking pictures at the same time... I nearly bumped into this yellow car!!)

Lake Carmel is in Putnam County, NY, it is an hour or so north of NYC.

I think Saratoga is about 3 hours north of where i am.

Dennis

That's an awesome cloudscape, but the heavy yellow saturation was a bit much for me. I played with it in photoshop a little... here is what I came up withto reduce the yellow a little, plus some levels adjutments, and a light gray fill layer in color burn blending mode to increase contrast...

That's a beautiful area. I've been to Kingston and FIshkill. I miss the beauty of Upstate NY, but I surely don't miss the long winters!!

Very dramatic shot, JD! I like the graininess in the clouds and above the horizon, as well as the good saturation and contrast... it really adds a lot of feeling and emotion to the shot. The short bolts of lightning are a perfect touch!

One question on your exposure-- how fast was your shutter speed?

Smellyfish,

Thanks for the suggestion on adjusting the color on my cloud shot. The sky was actually golden and was captured as I recall it. To each his own...

That's more difficult to answer than you would think! I was trying to catch some lightning, so I was shooting at f 5.0 with exposure bracketing at +/- .7 and my exposure compensation at -1.0.
I got a 3 shot burst at 1/50, 1/80, and 1/125.
I used the best parts from different images to create a montage, with lots and lots of fine tuning in Photoshop.
Here are the three originals:
1/50sec
1/80sec
1/25sec

Wow! Definitely much more involved than it would first appear... definitely a testament to your skill in Photoshop. My biggest reason for inquiring about the shutter speed was the fact that you had captured the lightning-- something I have tried rather unsuccessfully to do with my limited point/shoot camera (auto shutter and no burst mode).

This is what we were seeing...a broken link. I think Paige was exercising a lovely sense of humor, describing the broken link box! 8-)

I had just picked up my three boys and we were on the way home. I had my camera, but no tripod with me. I shot in exposure bracketing to give me different depths to the clouds, but mainly to try to catch some lightning. I didn't expect to, but I did get that little one, and at the fastest shutter speed! Go figure...
Thanks for your comments!

Correct. PBase does not allow deep-linking of an image stored there from another site (in other words, you can't embed it with an img tag here) unless you have a paid PBase account.

You can, however, use the globe icon and provide us a link to the image page there. That link would be //www2.pbase.com/image/19723893.
