Here's an honest question...what happens when a person with a hyphenated name marries another person with a hypenated name? Seems to be the whole hyphenated name movement was a little shortsighted...

I think they just add the hyphenated name to the end of theirs.

well lets say that rob smith marries joan rivers (first name that came to me, haha) and she wanted to him to have her name. His new name would be Rob Smith-Rivers right?

On the same hand you also have Mark Anthony marrying Cindi Crow and he wants her to have his name so she becomes Cindi Crow-Anthony?

Now both persons get a divorce and meet each other and Cindi Crow-Anthony wants to marry Rob Smith-Rivers. Depending on them they could be Rob Smith-Rivers-Crow-Anthony if they wanted to but after thinking about it and putting myself in "Rob's" shoes I would think that they would just combind and drop the previous marriage last names and become Rob Smith-Crow and Cindi Smith-Crow.

But if they have kids named Bob Smith-Rivers and Janet Smith-Crow and they get married and she keeps her last name and have a son named River Smyth, would he become River Smyth Smith-Rivers-Smith-Crow?

Let's keep it simple and say poor ole River has a son and wants to give him the same name... does he become Little River Smyth Smith-Rivers-Smith-Crow or is he River Smyth Smith-Rivers-Smith-Crow Jr.?

I guess that's my point. If last names are supposed to somehow denote a lineage, doesn't it get ridiculous as soon as you go beyond 2 names? And if you always drop names to keep it to 2 names, doesn't the whole "preserving both sides of the family name" only really stretch one additional generation?

Well looking at 99% of the marriages, women usually take the mans last name. So it may not become that but if they wanted to then yes he would become River Smyth Smith-Rivers-Smith-Crow Jr.

AND FYI there is no simple about this, hahahaha These freaking people want to keep their names. hahahahaha
