I have been using Pop-Up Stopper (free version) for some time now and it has done a good job. But in the last 2 weeks I have been swamped with pop up ads. I also used a spy ware program to remove spy ware.

Last night i got a new spy ware program (webroot spy sweeper) and it removed a bunch of stuff the other one did not catch.

I have turned of the messenger service that Hbunch mentioned in another thread. and I have done a few other things to help stop these pop ups.

But now I get them even when my browser is closed and I have not visited any web pages since I turned on my PC for the first time that day.

These pop ups are 1,000,000,000,000 times more annoying than a telemarketer or spam email.....

I have been thinking about actually buying a program instead of using the free ones.

I like the Symantec products and have had good luck with those and their new version of Norton Personal Firewall has ad blocking and pop up prevention.

Anyone using a popup stoper/blocker that actually works????

I've heard that using Mozilla Firebird as a browser makes it easier to get rid of pop-up ads. I haven't used it - I can't install it here at work.

Also, disabling java scripting on all sites, then enabling it on a site-by-site basis as you need it (using a "safe sites" list) has worked for other people. Then you don't have to buy anything. If you come across a site that requires java, just add it to your list (if you want to).

thanks Steve, I went and disabled the java stuff, and disabled a few other things in IE. Hopefully this will cut down on the popups.

I use Zonealarm Pro - it seems to work well, gives you lots of control and includes a firewall.

I've been using the free version of the firewall for years but upgraded recently to block popups. Works for me :-)

Before you do anything else, make sure there is nothing running in the background that isn't supposed to be. Programs like Kazaa will pop-up windows. Ctrl-Alt-Del and check your task manager for processes that look fishy and end them.

Ads-Gone Ad Blocker - downloaded from www.pcworld.com works great! It is free for 21 days, and then you have to pay.. but I bought 3 licenses for something like US$24.00. Now it is on both my home computers, and on my dad's at his house! We love it!!!

The beta version of Google's IE toolbar now comes with popup blocker support:

//toolbar.google.com/

Pretty good for me so far.

Something else to do, which helped for me is to goto RUN and type in msconfig. run that, and when it pops up, goto startup. disable anything that you don't want to come up on startup. I found quite a few things in there that shouldn't have been in there. anything that looks fishy, disable it. Things were 'starting up' on my computer that I didn't even know were starting up.

I've never heard of pop-ups that open without even having a browser open or being online! How VERY annoying that would be!

We have cable, and are online A LOT; we use POW!, a free pop-up utility from AnalogX - it's under browser add-ons. Has worked very well for us.
