Would you click "Next" or not? |

No, it is a scam. You have to sign up in three catagories with one of the offers in each. Which is a trial for blockbuster online dvds in the mail, then some book club requiring you to buy 5 books within a year and then you have to be accepted by American Express Blue credit card or get a satelite direct tv subscription. It is really dumb and I fell for it 5 years ago cause I wanted a computer and stupid me 22 years old. Although it wasn't through a pop up. It was just an advertisement on a website saying free laptop. Well I didn't get a laptop cause I didn't fullfill the last thing. Which most people who click on this are the people who can't fulfill it.
Don't click and think there is a free anything waiting for you.

Obviously, I'm not excited. Duh. But curiosity makes me wonder a few things...like why did I get a popup when they are "blocked".

Run one or more adware scanners IMMEDIATELY.

I'd be willing to bet you have adware/spyware on your puter. Might want to go D/L Spybot Search and Destroy and run it.

No popup blocker can block everything. Somebody will always find a way to get through. |

I have Ad-Aware and have run it. I decided to give Spybot a try, and I've got to say it really pissed me off. The site leads you to believe it is free, runs a "scan" (took about 1/100th the time of the Ad-Aware scan, which makes me wonder), found a bunch of "infections" and then wanted to make me buy it to get rid of them. Thanks Leroy, but no thanks. That kind of tactic really turns me off to a product. If I want to buy one, I'll go to a more straight-forward product. |

If you got this while browsing DPC, your computer is almost definitely infected with some sort of adware. DPChallenge does not serve popup advertisements anywhere on the site.

That's not the real Spybot Search & Destroy then. There are bogus products using the same name.
The genuine article, which is COMPLETELY free for personal use, can be downloaded from //safer-networking.org or //spybot.info.
EDITED TO ADD: When you go to spybot.info, after selecting your language, if the page you end up on looks different than this, then something is very wrong.

I have to agree that there is something on your computer doing this. I had a friend that would get these all the time but they were for porno stuff. Even when she wasn't connected to internet they would come up. Freaked her kids out the first time it came up, the little boy thought he did it somehow and was scared of getting in trouble.
These things are sneaky and while I could see part of it in the windows remove programs area all that would come up is a message saying I had to go to their website to uninstall...yeah that's gonna happen. After searching her system in regular and safe mode we found it and got rid of it. |

I agree, I've been using the product for quite a while and have never had an issue with it.

I can buy as many laptops as I need thanks to this very kind deposed leader of Nigeria. I just sent him all of my bank info, so I shall be receiving $25,000,000 USD very soon -- so long, suckers! |

Terry - I followed your link and it eventually lead me to their authorized mirror page - I chose to use the Freeware Archive site which takes you here.
As you can see, the banner says Spybot - Search and Destroy with a link to Search and Destrot - Free That gets the same (bogus) download as I got the first time. The file is named "Setup.exe" and is 1.8 meg size.
I used a different mirror tha next time and finally got the real thing - "spybotsd14.exe" size 4.9 meg. I wonder how many others get scammed by that and if the developer is aware?

Hi Bill.
It looks like you followed a Google AdWords ad from Freeware-Archiv to the fake Spybot S&D. The placement and wording of that ad is confusing. I sent an email to Freeware-Archiv suggesting that they reconsider the design and/or advertising vendor for that page, and also emailed the spybot.info people to suggest that they remove Freeware-Archiv from their mirrors list until they get the issue resolved.

You can also get the real, free versions of Ad-aware, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster (which blocks many items before they can reach your computer) at CNET's www.download.com --
Just make sure you skip the "sponsored" versions at the top of the page, which have similar names. |

Some bad people have found a way to use Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN or Live Messenger) to pop these things up on your screen... Windows Messenger is the one that is used by Network Guys to send messeges (popups) to users on a network, or Printers use it to Popup up Job completed notices and yadi yadi ya...
I have all my (WinXP) peeps disable Windows Messenger.
Start > Run... > control (or choose control panel from Start Menu)
Add or Remove Programs > Add Remove Windows Components
Near the bottom uncheck Windows Messenger
(Again does not effect any of your other IM programs)

ya know all those "feel good" emails that everyone sends to all their mailing lists? Well their only purpose is to collect valid e-mail addresses and IP addresses. It almost breaks my mom's heart but I finally had to ask her to not forward all those nice e-mails to me. Some people think that they are just nice or informative notices. Oh ya and then all protest e-mails, the one where you are asked to put your name on the bottom and forward to your friends. When it hits 1000 names you are to send it to the White House. Does anyone really think that that a random typed list of names means anything to anyone????\.
.
These are part of the reason you can get adware, spyware and virus in your computer. But I really did get $25,000,000 from Nigeria and I also stayed in a Holiday Express last night ;) |

FYI - there is a trojan out there called Zlob that masquerades as a free anti-spyware program. Be careful.
