After uploading pictures to my computer, I routinely look at them using Irfanview. Up through recently, I rotated and resaved pictures taken vertically, unawares that this changed the EXIF information and made it modified EXIF data. I became aware of this when submitting to a different site, where I needed to submit the unmodified original, and a couple were not accepted for this reason.

I don't know how many DPChallenge users might be doing the same as I, maybe none, but just in case, EVEN JUST ROTATING YOUR PICTURE in Irfanview changes the EXIF. I didn't realize that. A while back here at DPChallenge I was asked to submit an original for a DQ request, and I submitted what I thought was the unaltered original - turns out I didn't. I feel pretty stupid for not having realized this earlier, and I'd like to avoid the same problem for anyone else.

My tiffs do contain all the exif information. It differs per camera and per software I guess. Strange if the 3800 doesn't, it was introduced later as the 602, wasn't it?

Hi Ursula,
I have a small program called Exifer, where I can safe my original exif data and put it back into the new file if I want to. You can find the program easily on the net.

Here´s one link

I only use it for Macro and indoor!

You should always keep your originals as they come out of the camera untouched, whether for DPC or otherwise. These are the digital equivalent of your negatives.

Always work on a new copy of your files when editing.

Ursula do you have this problem when doing a JPEG Lossless Rotation in Irfanview? This is the only way you should really rotate a JPEG, as a regular rotate-and-save results in further compression loss and possible artifacting.

Just to show how dumb I am, I didn't know either about the jpeg lossless rotation. Haven't tried it. Will try it. But, for the last two weeks or so, I haven't rotated any originals, NONE!!!

My first step in uploading pic to my computer is to move them to an "incoming" folder and make them read only. From there I copy them to other folders for "processing". Then when I accumulate enough in the incoming folder, I save them off to CD.

Though I have still accidentally rotated a few before I made them read only... :-(
