when someone votes a 1 or 2 they should be required to give a reasonable reason. "i hate trees" or "i hate ducks" isnt a reasonable reason to give that low of a score. the photographer could then see a weird comment report it and if SVC sees its paired with the 1 or 2 could then remove that vote. It would discourage a lot in my opinion.

I thought we had something like this? If you vote low (a 1, 2, or 3), a box pops and encourages you to leave a comment that expains why.

Am I right? :)

Hmmm...I just reread the first post...and you may have already included that. Ok, I'm leaving now!

I do not agree with you
Poor images receive much more comments than the average 5 and something picture

I don’t think it’s verry usefull to have 20-30 coments – blury, bad composition, to dark, are you competing for the broun?

Personaly, I̢۪m trying to give more coments to the average pictures than to the bad ones

That is true, its happened to me, all the middle (wo)men lack comments, maybe its hard to comment because there isn't anything really great or nothing too poor. I comment on every single image I vote on, gives everyone a fair chance.

Can't say that I agree with this proposal... Lord knows you get enough flack when you score an image a 5 and then have the audacity to suggest that the image would have score better if the person had...(take your pick of reasons why...)

One can only imagine the kind of PMs that would be generated in instances where you gave the image a 1 or 2 score.

As an aside, why is it that no one ever suggests removing the 9 and 10 scores... a lot of images truly don't deserve those either.

I think it's unfair to assume that all images that get ones somehow deserve them.

Try this instead:
1. The image is competently shot...not out of focus, no color cast, no aggregious compositional errors...
2. It does fit the challenge and clearly so.
3. It contains a subject that some people find objectionable (such as a cross, an american flag, a rubber duck)

Now...someone casts a vote of 1 without comment. Why?

and the third one does NOT constitute a reason for a 1 or a 2 and that score should be dropped

Because they didn't like it? I am not suggesting it is right, but then again it is that person's vote and they are free to cast it as they like. One must always remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what may seem unbelievably beautiful to you may indeed be hideous to another.

There's no way to enforce such requirement. Maybe you would prefer "I hate green trees" or "I really hate big green trees."

Why would you want a real comment from someone who gives out 1's or 2's? Someone who leaves comments like, "I hate trees" or "I hate ducks" don't have much to say. Get over it, let it go, and move on.

This subject comes up at least once a week. There is no way at all to police how people give out scores, and its not fair to chastise them for it either.. I am guilty of given out 1s, 2s & 3s, but the photos generally tend to deserve them, in other words, just truely abysmal photos.

Although I must admit this first DPL challenge being voted on certainly seems to be suffering from people purposely marking down good images. But at the end of the day, images do generally tend to finish where they deserve to finish up. Its just the rollercoaster ride along the way where we see our 6.5 image drop to 6.3 in a handful of votes even when it has over 170 votes on it that is the hardest part to bear.

Trolls will never be outed.. learning to deal with them is the best remedy. Although, HYPOTHETICALLY, I daresay some well placed bribes to the less morally bound of the SC* will get you the names of the people who consistantly vote low on good photos so then you can hunt them down and batter them to death with their keyboards..

(*not that there are any morally bankrupt members of the SC, I did say hypothetically).

Have someone monitor every comment to make sure it says something constructive and reasonable? By who's definition? ;o)

Probably, but if you actually force people to give a comment then they would just vote with a number that didn't mean they had to give a comment, like 3, and the scale would just squish upwards a bit.

Honestly I think if someone says "I don't like ducks" and leaves a 1 I'd be thankfull that they said anything at all. At least you know then that it's their prejudice rather than your shot at fault.

Oh, so we can expect a better excuse than "I hate nudes"? I could go for that :-)

Though you and I might not ever think this is right but "i hate trees" or "i hate ducks" or "I hate kid, or pet, or water drop, or smoke, or flower pictures" is a perfectly good reason to give a 1 if that is how the voter feels. It is their vote to use as they please.

One of my all-time favorite reasons voters use for a low score is that they HAVE to give a great image a score of 5 or less simply because they don't understand the image according to their own personal interpretation of the challenge topic which, I might add, can be and is wrong in many cases. I feel I don't always understand a photographer's interpretation so don't let that get in the way of my scoring and disagree with those who do, but I would NEVER disagree with their right to vote according to their own reasons.

Making someone say "I hate trees" would be counterproductive.

i hate trees is a lousy reason to give a photo a 1 and deplorable. a lot of the 1 votes are revenge for the voters own photo not doing well.

That's as maybe, but so long as they are applying that same principle across the board then it's not against any rules.

Maybe you'd get less 1s if you stopped shooting pics with a cell phone... ;)

I agree. And... let's just say they do hate "trees". They aren't going to change the 1 vote, they'll just make up other excuses, such as "Nice tree, but composition is poorly executed - 1."

Or Let us not forget "I'm amazing for that huge bone".

i don't look at it from the perspective of "are all low votes justified," but rather "what is the impact on voting based upon things other than the photograph." some people knock a photo for subject they don't like despite it being a good photo. more often, people probably bump up a mediocre photo for a subject they like. it probably all averages out.

for instance, a well-composed photo of a gutenberg bible (a work of art and important piece of history) will get a reactionary '1' vote by some people. at the same time, a poorly lit out-of-focus shot of a bible will get an automatic '10' from some people. if you get rid of the '1' that wasn't necessarily reacting to the quality of the photo, then the '10' should be eliminated as well. too hard to sort through.

best solution is to just let everyone vote and see what happens. every photo will have some who respond against it (even some amazing shots that some people feel are too cliche, like milk-drops or northern lights).
