While walking to the train, I saw two groups of three planes each flying NW across San Francisco Bay. I didn't hear anything about enemy submarines off the Pacific Coast, or any local air shows either.

Sorry, but this was the best (closest) of about six shots I got as they flew past, Interestingly, they seemed to change formation several times. Your speculations or suspicions are welcome ....

P47 Thunderbolts?

The one in the rear has a wider wingspan and another tail, but still round edged wings. Rules out the Mustang. Could be a P39 Air Cobra.
Wouldn't rule out the Corsair for the other two as well.
