I was just about to quote pawdrix when I took a look at his comments, now all nuked!
Guess it will be the first and last time I ever see Steve speechless - or is that post speech - lessened? :-)
I have found this thread real useful and kind of think that maybe this sums it all up:
"Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."

Just my opinion but I rarely connect with images on the front page and I don't expect most people here to be in sync with me there. If I stand alone in that...it's ok with me.
Almost all of my favorite images, journalistic or art are so flawed technically, yet they stand the test of time. So, I'm more fixed on why that is these days than technique. I suppose what I'm saying is "don't put the carriage before the horse". I think many here could stike a better balance.
I read a lot of other peoples comments to see if I can get into the sites mindset....and I see people pointing out distractions that really (imo) aren't there...grain that may have a nice home in the image being treated as a negative etc. etc. etc. Critics taking technical consideration to what I see as an unhealthy level and missing the entire point of otherwise great images. |
When you enter one of the contests here you are entering a popularity contest. The photos that win are the ones that appealed to the widest range of voters. Period. If you gathered all the greatest/famous photographers ever and had them vote (without any collaboration) you'd get the same exact thing happen which is the photos that appealed to the widest amount of voters would rise to the top.
As for getting comments that just focus on the technicals I don't see how that's a bad thing. Right off the bat they are telling you two things, A.) they have an issue with your technicals and B.) they are telling you your subject matter didn't hold much impact but the third fuzzy leaf in the background on the left side which is "too distracting" did. Even if I didn't agree with the technical complaints you can't get around the fact that your photo as a whole didn't make a positive impact. Of course that's just one person hence why you look at what everyone is saying or not saying.
