I have decided to enter the following three photos in a competition. None of them scored amazingly, but I would love to hear any suggestions, or critiques you have to offer. I still have a little bit of time to do some photoshoping so every piece of advice would help. Appreciate your time :D

OR

I am submitting the first two as portraiture, and the third as an abstract.

My first piece of advice is to not take DPC scores as much of an indication. Now, comments about serious technical flaws should be listened to, but I've seen shots do poorly here that rock in other arenas.

More specifically, I don't think the first or third shots need any adjustments at all. But I'd retitle that first one - even reading your notes, it still seems awkward. I might try something more directly connected to what's going on in the shot. If you want it to be her boyfriend, something like "Dangerous Distractions" or "Dangerous Curves." If you want to go for creepy adult inappropriately behaving, something like "While her hands were busy ..."

For the middle one, I'd just crop it in tighter.

can the top one be a looser crop at the bottom? or it it the whole frame?

theres something about the colours in the singer that im not a fan of, have you tried this in b&w?

I really like the top one; I agree the title doesn't help it much, though I understand your desire to link it to your thinking. I don't think it needs any work; it's got a voyeuristic quality to it, as if we're seeing a moment we're not supposed to see, but then it's also a deeply creepy moment - should you step in? just keep walking? The man's smile, the tension in his hand, the set of her jaw as she looks down... It's really a fine piece of work.

The singer... have to agree with boysetsfire; the colors don't quite work; the little blob of color behind him is distracting, and the focus seems a little soft.

As for the abstracts; I like them as stock photo abstracts or backgrounds, but they don't do a whole lot on their own for me. For what it's worth, I prefer the original to the tidied one.

In the for what it's worth category, I REALLY like the top one alot, just the way it is. Don't care whether it has a title or not, actually. But do enter it.

Oh - you posted the cleaned-up abstract after my initial response. I strongly prefer the original abstract to the cleaned-up one.

my favorite is the top one ... if you're going to pick one of the abstract ones, I like the non-cleaned up version best ...

I like the top photo! It doesn't work as a thumbnail, but when enlarged, it is a very engaging image. Depending on the type of competition you are submitting for, that one could do quite well.

Hey there. I really like the first one, the only thing I find distracting is the brightness of the teeth on the guy. Other than that I think it fulfills the title very well. Nice job on all the lighting.

The second is a pretty straight ahead concert action shot. I like the expression on the singer, and the way he fills the frame, however I might try and alter the colouring a bit and see what shades you like best. I am not real crazy about the orangey colour.

For the two abstract photos, I definately like the second one with the imperfections of the grape less obvious.

Best of luck in the competition!
