I just found a recipe for kitty litter cake and I was wondering if anyone has tried it and would it go over good with a group of Second Graders?
We have to do snacks once a month at school and this just sounds really gross enough that the kids will love it...I'm already looking for ideas for something different for this years school snacks.
Kitty Litter Cake
A real recipe! Guaranteed to make your next party remembered!
1 spice or German chocolate cake mix (and ingredients listed on mix)
1 white cake mix (and ingredients listed on mix)
1 pkg. white sandwich cookies
1 large pkg. vanilla instant pudding mix (and ingredients listed on mix) green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls
1 new kitty litter box (please! Not a used one!)
1 new kitty litter box liner
1 new pooper scooper
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).
Prepare pudding mix according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble. Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender, they tend to stick, so scrape often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix using a fork or shake in jar.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. You probably won't need all of the pudding. Mix it with the cake and feel it; you don't want it soggy, just moist. Gently combine.
Line new, clean kitty litter box. Put mixture into litter box.
Put three unwrapped Tootsie Rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie Rolls and bury in mixture.
Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.
Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls, 3 at a time in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Or, only spread 5 of the remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top. Take one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs.
Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a new pooper scooper.

I'd be careful about using the box liner. You might want to think about substituting some 'food grade' material. Sometimes the plastic liners are impregnated with nasty stuff you wouldn't want contacting the cake. I've seen, and enjoyed one of these cakes at work. They're a hoot! Martha Stewart and Roseanne Barr made a dirt cake on M's tv show. I don't remember if it was baked or just assembled in a toy bucket. They used the gummi worms and it was adorable.

As the oldest of 5 children, the youngest of which is two, I would like to mention that if you do decide to make these, you might wanna make sure you stress the fact that they don't want to go home and "investigate" their cat's litter box.
Cause yeah.... ew.

That is, ummm, well, interesting. I can hear the kids now, "Hey mom, guess what we had for snack?? Some woman brought in her cat's litter box, and you know what, it wasn't half bad. Where's Friskie, I want you to try it!!!"
hahahahahhahahhahahahahahahah
(Just as a side note, in some schools where I have worked, "homemade" snacks weren't allowed, only prepackaged stuff. I'm sure the teacher will let you know.)

Already know homemade snacks are premitted here, as long as all the things necesary for each child are provided...like the plates and spoons. I was thinking though there are 24 kids in the class I am going to have to adjust the number of tootsie rolls so each child gets a "turd" LOL that sounds so nasty. |

I already know I am safe there too. The school keeps the same kids together from 1st to 6th grade and only allergies in his class are pollen and mold related.
