I have another show coming up and I need to shoot the poster on Wednesday. My SB600 just melted so I need to find a solution ASAP. This is going to be a large room-size-shot of 10-20 girls posed. I still have an SB800 and an SB600 but am not sure that's going to be enough.

I saw a used and cosmetically beat up white lightning 10,000 on e-bay for <$100 but really don't know anything about those particular units. In your opinion would I be better off with that or spending $225 on an another sb600?

which will be more powerful?

I'll even accept a response from Kavey ;)

I'd go with the SB600...the White Lightning, although much more powerful, isn't nearly as portable. Just comes down to whatever you need it to do I guess.

I'm not a strobe expert by any means. I know several folks(online only) that use the white lightening brand and swear by them. They are powerful and rugged strobes. I will tell you though that if your shooting fast enough to melt more then one flash while shooting, then you need strobes. However just a strobe isnt going to fix your problem. Strobes need recycle time and can be overheated just as well as flash units can. You need to slow down and take less shots to make what you need to work for you. One strobe isnt going to give you even lighting you generally need 2 or more. Maybe not what you were looking for but hey its a response and a bump.

No, this is good info - it is what I'm looking for ;)

Portability isn't really a problem, I normally have the same 20X30 room to shoot in with 12 foot wide paper. On show nights I am only allowed to use flash/strobes on dress rehearsal nights and get the run of the place to set lights up however I want.

I've been wanting / needing to go to strobes for a while but just haven't had the money. The white lightnings do look very good - I like them better than Alien Bees because they sound more rugged and it sounds like they would handle the heat of heavy use better.

what I'm really hoping for is a little advice on the White Lightning 10,000 in particular. From what I understand those are the first series white lightnings they made so it could potentially be 20 years old or more. Would something that old still be a lot more more powerful than my SB800? I was thinking of using it in conjunction with my flashes (well - that is before I realized that I had melted 2 of them). So now it would just be that and my SB800. I haven't used studio strobes before though so want to make sure I'm not just being dumb. I think I can get it for around $150 shipped. A new sb600 would be around $250 shipped.

WOOHOO! Got the strobe for $89. From my initial tests it's about 1 stop more powerful than my SB800 so it'll be a good replacement for my burned out sb600(s).

Now to figure out how to light a big group with just one light...
