I was driving yesterday and someone slammed on their brakes infront of me and my 5D went flying off the front seat of my car, and now the LCD screen is shattered. What should I do???

Contact your insurance company and submit a claim.

You DO have insurance on the cam, right??

Ask DrAchoo - I believe he has plenty of experience in broken 5Ds :¬P

Take it in to be fixed. Shouldn't be too awfully expensive. Might as well have it tuned up while there.

THEN....

purchase a nice, single body, accessory bag so this will not happen again.

A $50 bag would of saved you a few hundred dollars in fixes.

That really sucks. I suppose the only thing you can do is to send it in to Canon for fixing. I keep my camera on the floor when in the car (preferably behind me), much safer.

Any idea how much this will cost and how long it will take?

That's why I ALWAYS have the camera on my lap in the car. Easy to grab if I need to stop quickly. I'm sorry yours is broken, sounds like a trip to Canon is in your camera's future. As for cost, I don't know, but you can call the service department before you ship it and ask them for a ballpark figure.

TOM,

If you live in S.CALI., take it to Samy' camera. The main store is on 3rd and Fairfax, near Melrose.

they are really good about getting gear back to ya at a fast pace. Especially if you tell them that it is an emergency, and you need the camera for an up coming shoot.

Make sure to take your warranty with you, and some cash.

Why cash, because you are going to want to buy that $50 camera bag so this will never happen again.

Just curious did you have the camera out of the bag just laying in the front seat? If so thats a bad practice to have. You cant survive an accident with no protection dont expect your camera too.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. Honestly Canon is the only one to be able to tell you what its going to cost. Even if you e-mail them they are going to say they need to see it to give an accurate estimate. I'd expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 if I had to guess.

Yeah, I was trying to get to an awesome sunset so I put it in the back seat with my hoodie covering it. NEVER going to do that again.

Man_Called_Horse - I was just at Samys yesterday morning to buy a new lens, so I'll drive back there today. Any chance they're open Sundays?

I had Canon replace the cracked rear lcd on my 20D just over a year ago, it cost $180 (no labor charged, just for the part). On a 5D you have a bigger screen though so might be more. I live about an hour north of Irvine, so I just drove it down and picked it up in 4 days when it was done. During that time they also replaced all shutter mechanisms, cleaned the sensor and inner workings and gave it a tune up, all for no extra charge. Being friendly to the seemingly overworked lady behind the counter might have helped get the extras. Good luck!

OHHHH yeah, I think they open at 10 am, and close at 3pm. I THINK.

That sucks!

I've lost two 5D's to water, and nobody wanna insure me anymore. :(

Canon Service rep told me that the 5D will easily break with water. They've even had people come in with water damaged 5Ds from sweat. People walking without a t-shirt with the camera around their neck. Be aware!
