ok, so I live in a town, where one weeked every year is set aside as garage sale weekend, and it's pretty serious. all traffic laws are disbanded, garage sales are set up everywhere and people come from all over to find a bargin.
it's great, imho
so I have some money put back and I'm planning on looking for some props and backgrounds, and was wondering if anyone has used unusual things as props and backgrounds that they would suggest using? on my list of things are;
1. an old wooden ladder
2. baby blankets
3. kids toys??? that one is still a maybe
what else would you think I should look for. We are useing the studio's money and looking for some things that other studios around here don't use.

How about old table lamps, armchairs, brass bedstead? Old clothes, scientific equipment, garage equipment?
That's all I can think of for now. |

Fabrics. Especially metalics, feathery, furry, sheer.
Drapery sheers
Sheers good for putting over a window to difuse light coming in. The rest. For wrapping around your model for a high glam portrait. (aka Glamour Shots style, Just wrap the fabric around the model, with shoulders bare for a cheap glammy shot)
oh yeah and Hats!

so here is the deal as we stand.
I picked up a really sweet old drawing room chair for 15 bucks from a man who had to be at least 400 pounds and was smoking a pipe. I also picked up some nation geographics for the nerd in me, a big stack for a dollar. they were all of the 1966 editions and the begining of 1968 year. I want to post pictures of the chair, because I think it was the find of a lifetime.
garage sale weekend doesn't officaly start until tomorrow at 6 A.M but I was out scouting the ones that set up a day early. I still have 50 dollars in the budget and I'm excited for tomorrow.

You can pick up off season/holiday items dirt cheap at garage sales. Maybe keep an eye out for decorations to put away for holiday portraits. Have fun! I love garage sales, you never know what old treasures you'll find. |

so, I think we made out like a bandit...
We got our tall back drawing room chair (that is sweet), an old army footlocker that is dated during the vietnam war, two old black costume trunks, some baby blankets, and some old kids picture books...
all for 35 bucks and some quarters!
cassie also got some rockin early 90's neon green short shorts for a dime too, she is very proud of them.
(Cassie is my girlfriend...)

just got home from our last trip, and it was a good one, this one we bought things for me. I got a novelty mash vodka bottle, it's glass and hangs and looks like an I.V. drip with original stand and tubing. I think it may be worth something, but I like it even if it's not. I also got some large folded canvas to paint some backgrounds on, and a box of national geographic for three dollars, incuding the man on the moon one in mint condition from 69 that still has the plastic record insert page that you would put on an old 45 and it would play the audio tapes from the lunar lander mission!
I'm very happy that my five bucks went such a long way.
